Chapter 15: The Compromised Badge

#content-1

👉 Previous action: You broadcasted the raw audio of Julian and Arthur discussing the hit-and-run through the house intercom.

The intercom speakers crackled, the echoes of Arthur’s panicked voice dying down. A profound silence fell over the house, broken only by the rapid clicks of Maya’s keyboard. Arthur stood in the doorway, his face ashen, looking utterly broken. Julian, his rage still simmering, stared at me, then at our father.

Suddenly, heavy footsteps sounded on the main staircase. Detective Halloway appeared at the second-floor landing, his face flushed, his handgun now raised and pointed directly at me.

“Carver!” he bellowed, his voice tight with desperation. “Drop the equipment! Hand over that satellite hard drive!”

He advanced, his eyes darting between me and the laptop. This wasn’t about official police work; this was about the $220,000 kickback, his pension fund, and keeping Julian’s secrets buried.

Maya stepped between Halloway and me, holding up her phone. Its screen glowed with the live stream, now showing an astonishing 180,000 concurrent viewers. The chat feed scrolled furiously.

“Detective Halloway,” Maya said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. “This is live. And the State Police Regional Command desk is tracking the signal origin. They know exactly where we are, and exactly what’s happening.”

Halloway froze, his hand trembling slightly, his eyes fixed on the surging viewer count. The sound of distant sirens, growing louder with each passing second, began to filter through the windows.
