Chapter 17: The Next Morning

The federal agents crashed through the double doors, their movements precise and practiced. Marcus froze, the phone still pressed to his ear, the voice of his corporate lawyer fading into the background.

“Marcus Garrick,” the lead agent announced, holding up a warrant. “You are under arrest for federal fraud, perjury, and conspiracy.”

Marcus dropped the phone. It clattered loudly on his polished desk, the faint voice of his attorney now an indistinguishable buzz. His eyes darted around the room, searching for an escape, a loophole, anything. There was nothing.

He was led away from his desk, the desk where he had planned his empire, where he had plotted my destruction. As the agents cuffed him, something else happened.

His personal attorney, a man he had paid exorbitant fees to, a man who had sworn to protect him, walked into the office. He didn’t even look at the federal agents. He walked straight to Marcus, a formal letter clutched in his hand.

“Mr. Garrick,” the attorney said, his voice clipped and professional, “I am here to formally inform you of our firm’s withdrawal from your legal representation, effective immediately.”

Marcus stared, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly. “What? You can’t. Not now!”

“Your retainers have been exhausted,” the attorney stated, completely devoid of warmth. “Furthermore, due to the nature of the federal charges and overwhelming evidence, including your sworn testimony and the newly discovered documents, we deem your position indefensible.”

He held out the letter. “Additionally, I am obligated to inform you that all your personal bank accounts have been seized by federal order. Your $450,000 promotion has been officially rescinded by the Department of Defense. And you are facing 14 counts of federal fraud and perjury, with additional charges pending.”

Marcus stumbled, physically recoiling as if struck. His eyes, wide with sudden, terrifying understanding, darted to my attorney. He looked at the federal agents. Then he looked at the letter in his hand.

The handwritten confession. The one he had tucked away, the one he had thought was his ultimate insurance policy.

He realized in that moment that he was the architect of his own downfall. He had given me the weapon. He had written every damning word himself. He had built his own gallows, and now, without a single word spoken in a courtroom, he was being led to it.

The federal agents pulled him towards the door. His corporate office, once a symbol of his power, was now just a stage for his final, complete public humiliation. He had lost everything, not through physical violence, but through the inescapable weight of the truth he himself had recorded.
