Just as David Chen’s voice delivered the final, damning details of the federal wire fraud and conspiracy charges, a sharp click echoed from the locked door. It swung inward, revealing Agent Sarah Kincaid, her face grim.

Behind her, two federal marshals stepped into the room. One moved directly towards Evelyn, the other towards the door, which I now realized Brenda was standing near, having just tried to enter the suite.

“Evelyn Higgins,” Agent Kincaid stated, her voice cutting through the silence left by the now-silent speaker. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and first-degree murder in the death of Mark Higgins.”

The marshal moved quickly, his movements practiced and efficient. Evelyn’s eyes, still wide with a dawning horror, darted from Kincaid to me, then to the marshal reaching for her. She opened her mouth to protest, but no sound came out. The cold metal of the handcuffs clicked around her wrists.

Brenda, who had frozen in the doorway, let out a terrified gasp. “No! You can’t! This is a mistake!”

“Brenda Higgins, you are also under arrest,” Kincaid said, her gaze unwavering. “For your role in the conspiracy, trade secret theft, and murder.”

The second marshal secured Brenda, her protests growing louder, more frantic, as she was led away.

Evelyn, her face ashen, looked at me as the marshal guided her past the desk. Her eyes, usually so sharp and domineering, were now filled with a desperate, bewildered fury. She probably expected a look of triumph from me, a gloating smile of victory.

But there was nothing. No satisfaction, no joy. Only an immense, crushing hollowness.

I simply turned away, my gaze fixed on the empty chair where Mark used to sit when he visited his mother. The silence in the room was profound, punctuated only by the fading sound of their receding footsteps and the distant clang of the elevator doors. The police escorted my former family away in handcuffs, but Mark was still gone. Justice was served, but it tasted like ash.
