Chapter 18: The Next Morning (Resolution / Epilogue)

The crowd’s cheers for Aris’s mayoral announcement swelled, his voice rising to a triumphant crescendo. “…a new dawn for our great city, free from the shadows of the past and built on a foundation of progress and prosperity!”

Just as he finished, a ripple went through the front of the plaza. The three federal sedans had disgorged their occupants. Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Ellison led the charge, flanked by half a dozen federal agents, their faces grim. They moved with a chilling efficiency, cutting directly through the stunned reporters and security personnel.

Aris, still basking in the applause, faltered. His smile vanished. He turned, his eyes widening in disbelief as Ellison and her team ascended the steps of City Hall, straight for him.

“David Aris,” Ellison’s voice cut through the microphone, clear and authoritative, silencing the crowd. “I am Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Ellison. We have an emergency arrest warrant for you.”

A collective gasp swept through the plaza. The cameras, which had moments before been focused on Aris’s triumphant face, now swiveled, their lenses capturing the unfolding drama.

Aris’s face went white. “What is this? This is an outrage! My press conference—”

“You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, land theft, and public corruption,” Ellison stated, her voice unwavering. Two agents stepped forward, their hands moving with practiced speed.

Julian, standing behind Aris, tried to slip away, melting into the cluster of aides. But a federal marshal, anticipating the move, stepped directly into his path, placing a firm hand on his shoulder. Julian froze, his face a mask of panic. He was detained for questioning.

Clara and Thomas Garthe stood frozen, their mouths agape, their celebratory expressions replaced by stark terror.

Ellison held up a document, a copy of Eleanor’s letter. Her voice, amplified by the microphones, resonated across the plaza, chilling and absolute. “The charges are based on extensive evidence, including a handwritten letter from the late Deputy Mayor Eleanor Hallowell, dated 1998, detailing Mr. Aris’s fraudulent acquisition of municipal land and his obstruction of justice.”

She then held up Evelyn’s flash drive, its simple black form now a symbol of devastating truth. “And unredacted municipal vault ledgers, also from 1998, which provide irrefutable proof of these crimes.”

The plaza erupted into chaos. Reporters shouted questions. The crowd surged forward, murmuring in shock and disbelief. Aris, his face contorted in a silent scream of rage and terror, struggled against the agents, his tailored suit rumpled as they placed him in handcuffs.

“This is a political hit!” Aris roared, his voice hoarse, desperate. “I am innocent!”

But his words were lost in the pandemonium. As the agents led him down the steps, past the rendering of his failed harbor project, his eyes, wild with fury, swept over the crowd. For a fleeting second, they locked onto mine. There was no longer any misunderstanding between us. Only absolute, raw hatred.

I stood at the back, a quiet, unseen witness. The city, Aris had told me, was a machine that chewed people up. But sometimes, even a small, forgotten cog could jam its gears.

You wasted three months wiping the chin of a dying old woman who isn't even your blood, my boyfriend Julian said, tossing his lanyard onto my desk before walking out of my life.
