Chapter 18: The Next Morning (Resolution / Epilogue)

The morning news blared from the coffee shop TV, an agitated anchor reporting on a developing story. I recognized the backdrop immediately: City Hall steps. Three figures stood there, all dressed in somber black.

Eleanor’s estranged niece, Clara Garthe, was front and center, her face a mask of grief. Next to her, a boisterous man with a severe haircut, Thomas Garthe, Clara’s husband. And then, a man I didn’t recognize, looking agitated and twitchy – Eleanor’s estranged nephew, Brad Hallowell.

They held up a formal-looking document. The anchor’s voice cut through the cafe’s morning bustle: “…joint press statement accusing Maya Lin of isolating the late Deputy Mayor Hallowell, withholding vital medication, and forging her signature on critical trust documents.”

A knot tightened in my stomach. This was Aris’s doing. He wasn’t just trying to bribe me; he was fabricating a narrative. This was Round 2 of his escalation.

I arrived at City Hall, the words from the news report echoing in my ears. My usual path to my cubicle felt longer, each step weighted with dread. The office was quiet, too quiet. Heads turned as I walked past, then quickly turned away.

My locker, usually crammed with files and a spare pair of shoes, was conspicuously empty. The small, personal items I’d accumulated – a framed photo of Eleanor, a thank-you note from a resident – were gone.

A pristine white envelope was pinned to the center of my desk. My name, “Maya Lin,” was typed neatly on the front. My hands trembled slightly as I pulled it off the corkboard.

Inside was a single sheet of paper. “Formal Suspension Letter.” It cited “Gross Misconduct and Ethical Violations” regarding the Hallowell Estate. It warned of a full internal investigation and potential termination.

Attached was a photocopy of the joint press statement I had just seen on TV. Clara Garthe, Thomas Garthe, and Brad Hallowell had all signed it. The signatures looked fresh, bold, as if etched with conviction.

I read Brad’s affidavit. He claimed Eleanor had been “distraught and confused” in her final months, whispering about “strangers in her house.” He alleged I had “restricted family visits” and “controlled her finances.” All lies.

I remembered Eleanor’s last days. She had been lucid, if frail. She had refused to see Clara or Brad, citing “past betrayals” and “greedy intentions.” She had shielded me from their calls, explicitly telling me they had no right to her time or her decisions.

My vision blurred. Aris hadn’t just recruited Clara and Thomas. He had expanded his reach, bringing in Brad to create a “unified family petition.” It lent credibility to their fabricated claims, making them a formidable legal front. They had even managed to seize my personal effects from my locker, a petty but effective move to unnerve me.

I looked at my empty desk, the silence in the office feeling heavy and accusatory. My job, the one I had poured my idealism into, was hanging by a thread. My credentials, my reputation—all under attack.

A chill snaked up my spine. Aris wasn’t just playing politics. He was playing for keeps. And he was very good at it.

You wasted three months wiping the chin of a dying old woman who isn't even your blood, my boyfriend Julian said, tossing his lanyard onto my desk before walking out of my life.
