You wasted three months wiping the chin of a dying old woman who isn't even your blood, my boyfriend Julian said, tossing his lanyard onto my desk before walking out of my life.
Aris’s black SUV idled just outside the perimeter fence, its headlights blinding against the crumbling facade of the old orphanage. He stepped out, his expensive suit a stark contrast to the derelict surroundings. His two attorneys flanked him, their faces grim and watchful.
“Maya Lin,” Aris called out, his voice carrying clearly in the night air. He didn’t sound surprised. “Always digging in places you shouldn’t.”
I gripped the ledger and Eleanor’s sealed letter tighter, tucking them quickly under my coat. My heart hammered against my ribs, but my resolve solidified. I wouldn’t be intimidated.
He walked closer to the fence, stopping just short of the broken section I had used to enter. “Let’s be pragmatic, Maya. You’re out of a job. Your family is suing you. Your reputation is being shredded across every news channel in the city.”
He paused, letting his words sink in. “There’s an easy way out of this.”
One of his attorneys produced a slim folder. “We’ve drafted a non-disclosure agreement,” he stated, his voice devoid of emotion. “It’s very generous.”
Aris held out a single, perfectly tailored hand. “Sign it, and you’ll receive a $250,000 corporate policy directorship in Chicago. A clean slate. A new life. No questions asked, no charges pressed.”
The amount was specific, tempting. A quarter of a million dollars, and a ready-made career far from the chaos he had created. He truly believed I was holding out for money. He couldn’t grasp that Eleanor’s memory meant more to me than any sum.
“You’re facing immediate criminal indictment for burglary and illegal entry,” Aris continued, his voice hardening, pulling me back to the present danger. “That’s a felony, Maya. Your career, whatever’s left of it, would be over permanently.”
He gestured to the lawyers. “My team can have the local precinct here in minutes. Your choice.”
I looked from Aris’s cold, calculated face to the tattered ledger tucked beneath my coat. This wasn’t just my story anymore; it was Eleanor’s. Her secret, her legacy, her justice.
The offer hung in the cold night air, a tangible temptation. Financial security, a fresh start, escape from the brutal fight. But at what cost? Eleanor’s trust dissolved, Aris’s corruption hidden, his ascent to power unchecked.
“You really think I’d take your dirty money, Aris?” I asked, my voice shaking slightly, but holding firm. “After everything you’ve done?”
His face, previously calm, tightened. A muscle in his jaw twitched. “Don’t be a fool, girl. This isn’t a game.”
I slipped the envelope deeper into my coat pocket, securing it. “No,” I said, meeting his gaze directly. “It’s not.”
“Then you’ve made your choice,” Aris said, his voice flat, devoid of negotiation. He turned abruptly, signaling to his attorneys. “Contact the police. Tell them we have a trespasser and a confirmed theft.”
As he walked back to his SUV, his eyes met mine one last time. There was no misunderstanding in his gaze now, only pure, unadulterated malice. The offer was withdrawn. The war was officially on.
