Chapter 19: The Cycle Begins Again

Three weeks later, the Fenwick Building still hummed with an unsettling energy. Though Marcus Gable was behind bars, and Pendelton was awaiting trial, the memory of what had transpired clung to the plaster walls and old floorboards.

Grandma Martha and I decided to move.

It wasn’t an easy decision. This apartment, despite everything, had become our home. But the chill at 2:14 AM still occasionally swept through the living room, even without Buster growling.

It was a residual haunting, Aunt Sarah explained, a footprint of suffering left behind. Clara had found justice, but her presence lingered.

Boxes were stacked high in every room, filled with our belongings. Buster, sensing the change, followed us from room to room, his tail thumping softly against cardboard.

“Are you sure about this, Leo?” Grandma Martha asked, her voice soft, as she carefully wrapped a delicate porcelain teacup. “It’s a big upheaval again.”

I nodded, taping shut a box marked “Kitchen.” “I think it’s for the best, Grandma. A fresh start. Somewhere without… echoes.”

We had found a new apartment across town, in another historic building, but one with a different vibe. Brighter, airier, and most importantly, far away from the Fenwick Building and its dark secrets.

I walked into the living room, now mostly empty. The center floorboard, where Buster had always stood, looked just like any other plank of wood.

But at 2:14 AM that morning, a profound cold spot had settled there, dropping the temperature by twenty degrees for a full minute before dissipating. It was a silent testament to the events that had unfolded.

Marcus was gone, but the shadows he created remained. Justice had been served, but the building itself felt like a tomb, now.

I picked up a stray dog toy, a worn-out rope, and tossed it for Buster. He caught it mid-air, his tail wagging. He was happy, truly happy, for the first time since we moved in. He had fulfilled his purpose, leading us to Clara.

We were leaving the Fenwick Building behind, hoping to leave the chilling past with it.
