The heavy clinic door creaked open, admitting Captain Nico and two of his senior enforcers. They walked in without a sound, their faces grim, their movements precise. The room, already tense, grew heavy with a new, profound silence.

Nico’s eyes swept over Victor, then the documents on the triage table, and finally, the scattered money on the floor. He didn’t need to ask. The evidence, and Victor’s defeated posture, spoke volumes.

“Victor Kowalski,” Nico’s voice was low, devoid of any warmth, any mercy. “You betrayed your family. You poisoned your brother. You sold out the Trident Guard for silver. And you ambushed my son.”

Victor didn’t flinch. He just stood there, his shoulders slumped, his gaze fixed on the floor.

“By the sacred tenets of this syndicate,” Nico continued, his voice resonating with authority, “I strip you of your rank. Your territory rights are revoked. All assets you held under our protection are forfeit.”

He paused, letting the words sink in. “You are hereby banished from this state. Permanently. If you are ever seen within these borders again, your life is forfeit.”

One of the enforcers stepped forward, roughly grabbing Victor by the arm. Victor didn’t resist. He was led away without a word, a broken man, stripped of everything. The heavy door clunked shut behind him.

The silence returned, even deeper than before. Nico turned to me, his gaze intense. My adrenaline, which had been pumping for days, began to recede, leaving me shaky and exhausted.

“Maya Kowalski,” Nico said, his voice softer now, but still firm. He gestured to the clinic, the empty triage table. “Your father built this network. He was a good man. A loyal man. A Trident.”

He walked closer, stopping directly in front of me. “The legacy of the Trident Guard requires a new keeper. A new steward for this network. We need a steady hand. Someone who understands. Someone with loyalty in their blood.”

His eyes dropped to my forearm, to the black trident tattoo.

“You are your father’s heir. You have proven yourself capable. More than capable,” he stated, his voice a quiet command. “Take your place, Maya. Take over your father’s position. The syndicate triage network is yours.”

He wasn’t asking. He was insisting. He was offering me power, a place, a future within the very organization that had consumed my family. The price of my freedom was my life within the mob.
