Chapter 19: The Road Out

A sudden scrape of rubber soles on the concrete floor made me jump. The heavy notebook slipped from my numb fingers, clattering loudly against the metal shelf.

“What are you doing in here, Maya?” a gruff voice demanded from the doorway.

Bruno Morreale, Victor’s chief enforcer, stood silhouetted against the dim light of the hallway. His imposing frame filled the entrance, his arms crossed over his chest. His eyes, usually unreadable, seemed to hold a flicker of something I couldn’t quite place.

I froze, the exposed ledger lying open on the shelf. I expected him to grab it, to drag me to Victor. Instead, he just stood there, watching me.

“That’s your father’s hand,” Bruno said, his voice softer than I expected, gesturing to the notebook. “He always wrote like that. Neat, too neat for a doctor.”

I slowly bent down, picking up the ledger. My heart still thudded, but a strange sense of calm began to settle. He hadn’t immediately turned me in.

“Victor ordered me to make it look like a heart attack,” Bruno said, his voice low, almost a whisper. He stepped further into the room, his shadow falling over me. “Three years ago. Your father. I told him I did it.”

My breath hitched. The air in the room seemed to vanish. Bruno, the man who had worked for Victor for years, the man I’d always seen as loyal to a fault, was telling me he had defied Victor’s direct orders.

“I faked the cardiac report,” Bruno continued, his gaze unwavering. “Your father was like a brother to me, Maya. I couldn’t do it. Not to him.”

A wave of shock washed over me, followed by a surge of gratitude. This was the man I’d always feared, yet he’d tried to protect my father. He’d gone against Victor.

“Victor’s moving against Captain Nico next,” Bruno warned, his voice dropping even lower. “He thinks with Leo out of the picture, he can get to the captain. He’s reckless. It’ll get us all killed.”

He wasn’t just informing me. He was offering an alliance.
