My Corrupt Uncle Forced Me to Work off Fake Mob Debts in a Backroom Clinic — Until My Sleeves Rolled Up and Revealed My Late Father's Elite Trident Tattoo
The two guards positioned themselves near the basement stairs, effectively blocking my escape. Victor watched me, a smug expression on his face, as if he’d already won.
“You really think anyone would believe you?” he scoffed. “A grieving, unstable girl making wild accusations against her only family?”
Just then, a frantic voice called from upstairs. “Victor! Captain Nico’s on the line! He’s demanding an update on Leo!”
It was one of the junior clinic assistants, her voice trembling. Victor’s composure shattered. His face twisted with annoyance and alarm. He glared at the guards.
“Stay here,” he barked, pointing a finger at them. “Don’t let her move.”
He stormed up the stairs, muttering under his breath about Nico’s impatience. As he passed Bruno, who was standing at the top of the stairs, an almost imperceptible exchange happened.
Bruno’s hand brushed mine as he descended a step. His fingers pressed something cold and metallic into my palm. A brass skeleton key. It was small, intricately cut, like something from an antique shop.
“Fanucci’s street office,” Bruno whispered, his eyes fixed on the retreating form of Victor. “Desk safe. Original un-redacted land deeds. He keeps them there.”
He didn’t wait for a response, just continued down another step, putting distance between us. The guards hadn’t noticed. They were too busy staring at me, their faces blank.
I quickly tucked the key into my pocket, my heart racing. Bruno had given me a lifeline, a concrete next step. Victor’s lie about Leo’s injuries, coupled with Nico’s pressure, had created this fleeting window of opportunity. It was small, but it was there.
The key felt heavy, holding the promise of uncovering even more of Victor’s secrets.
