Victoria Danforth’s smile vanished the moment the security office door clicked shut behind her. Evelyn, her sister, stood by the wall, arms crossed, eyes narrowed. The air grew instantly heavy.

“You really think you can play hardball, Elena?” Victoria’s voice was low, cutting through the silence.

I gripped the encrypted flash drive in my pocket. “I secured the footage. It’s safe.”

Victoria stepped closer, her expensive fabric suit brushing against the desk. “Safe? You’ve jeopardized my entire campaign. My future.”

“My daughter saw what she saw.” My voice didn’t waver. “And I won’t lie for you.”

Evelyn snorted. “You think this is about lies? This is about business, Elena. And you’re interfering.”

Victoria pulled a crisp, white envelope from her handbag. The paper felt thick, formal. She slapped it onto the desk.

“This is a formal 24-hour eviction notice,” she said, her eyes fixed on mine. “For your townhouse. Effective immediately.”

My breath caught. My home. Maya.

“You can’t do that,” I managed, my voice suddenly tight.

“Oh, I can,” Victoria countered, a cold edge to her tone. “It’s a Danforth property. Your lease agreement has a termination clause for ‘disruption of landlord’s business operations.’ And you, Elena, are a significant disruption.”

The ink on the page seemed to swim. Twenty-four hours.

“Consider this a taste of what the Danforth family can do,” Evelyn added, a cruel smirk on her face. “You think you’re alone in this? Think again.”

Later that evening, after Maya was asleep, the reality of their threat hit with sickening force. I was packing a small bag when I heard a rustle outside.

A young man, no older than twenty, was stapling a glossy flyer to a lamppost near our building. He wore a jacket I recognized from the Danforth campaign.

The flyer showed a grainy, unflattering photo of me, beneath a headline: “UNFIT MOTHER? Hotel Security Officer Elena Fairbanks Allegedly Neglects Child, Spreads Malicious Rumors.”

My stomach lurched. This wasn’t just Victoria. The entire Danforth family network, all their extended relatives and campaign operatives, were already out there. They were swarming the neighborhood, making sure the city saw me not as a whistleblower, but as a deranged, negligent mother.

They were cutting off my escape routes before I’d even had a chance to run.
