Chapter 12: A Year of Renewal

The weight of Nana Beatrice’s revelation, Clarissa’s continued existence, pressed down on me. Ten million dollars. Generations of political control. The truth had to come out, and not behind closed doors.

“We need to go to the Mayoral Debate,” I told Nana Beatrice, my voice firm. “Now.”

She looked at the old medical folder, then at me, a flicker of fierce determination in her ancient eyes. “It’s time. For Clarissa. For this city.”

We arrived at the Capital City Convention Center, where the mayoral debate was already underway, the lights of news vans blinding in the evening gloom. The studio green room was a chaotic mix of frantic campaign staff, buzzing cameras, and hushed conversations.

Victoria Danforth was there, adjusting her perfectly tailored suit, flanked by Evelyn, who looked particularly smug. Her fake pregnancy bump was carefully sculpted beneath her dress.

“Elena,” Evelyn hissed, spotting us enter the green room. Her eyes narrowed on Nana Beatrice and the folder clutched in her hand. “What are you doing here?”

Before I could answer, Evelyn lunged forward, placing a hand firmly on Nana Beatrice’s arm. “Nana, you shouldn’t be here. You need to rest.”

“Don’t you dare touch me, Evelyn,” Nana Beatrice said, her voice surprisingly sharp, though her frail body trembled slightly. Her gaze, however, remained unwavering. “I am here to speak the truth.”

Victoria turned, her eyes widening in alarm as she recognized the folder Nana Beatrice held. Panic flickered across her face.

“Nana,” Victoria pleaded, her voice low and urgent. “Please, not now. We can discuss this later.”

But Nana Beatrice merely shook off Evelyn’s hand, her eighty-four years seeming to fall away as a steely resolve settled over her features. She took a deep breath, her eyes sweeping over the bustling room, the technicians adjusting microphones, the bright studio lights.

The debate moderator, a well-known local journalist, was just being ushered to the stage. The director called out, “Two minutes to live!”

Nana Beatrice didn’t hesitate. With an unexpected burst of strength, she moved directly past Evelyn and Victoria, her gaze fixed on the brightly lit stage.

“Nana, no!” Evelyn cried, reaching out again, but it was too late.

The elderly matriarch, still clutching Clarissa’s medical file, stepped onto the live studio floor just as the opening statements began. The red “ON AIR” light above the main camera glowed, casting an ominous crimson haze over the set. Victoria, already at her podium, froze, her face draining of color.

The moderator, mid-sentence, faltered. All eyes in the studio, and soon, all eyes across the municipal viewing audience, were on the small, determined figure of Nana Beatrice Danforth, standing silently in the glaring lights.

She had made her entrance. The stage was set.
