My late mother’s silver rosary felt heavy against my chest. Its weight usually brought comfort, but not now.

The front door of my family home clicked shut with a soft finality, and I turned to see Marcus’s mother, Teresa Delaney, standing in our living room. Her hands smoothed the front of her embroidered apron, a nervous habit.

She had arrived unannounced, just as Marcus had requested, under the pretense of “settling a personal dispute.”

Teresa’s eyes, usually warm and quick to crinkle with laughter, were cool, almost accusatory. Marcus stood slightly behind her, a faint smirk playing on his lips.

He had twisted the narrative, I knew it. He’d painted me as the instigator, the jealous wife jeopardizing his prestigious new role at the Saint Claire Foundation.

“Elena,” Teresa began, her voice tight, “your behavior at the hospital was unacceptable. Marcus tells me you’ve been causing trouble.”

My stomach clenched. She had no idea about Chloe’s violent shove, or the affair itself. She only saw her son, threatened and maligned.

“He said you were questioning his authority, undermining his work,” Teresa continued, her gaze firm. “A wife supports her husband, not tears him down, especially when he’s trying to establish himself for your child’s future.”

Marcus nodded slowly, playing the aggrieved husband. His silence was a performance, designed to manipulate his mother’s traditional values against me.

A faint clatter came from the kitchen where his younger sister, Maria, was setting out a platter of sliced mangoes, oblivious to the tension. The mundane sound was a cruel contrast to the storm brewing in the living room.

I straightened my spine, the rosary digging into my skin. My voice, when it came, was soft but clear.

“Teresa, there are things you don’t know.”

“What things?” she challenged, her arms crossing. “That you resent Marcus for taking a leadership role when you’re pregnant? That you feel threatened by his ambition?”

She truly believed it. This wasn’t malice from her, but a profound misunderstanding fueled by Marcus’s carefully crafted lies.

“It’s not about ambition, Teresa,” I said. “It’s about integrity.”

Marcus shifted, a muscle jumping in his jaw. He probably thought I’d just start shouting, proving his point about my “erratic” behavior.

Instead, I reached into my purse, my fingers finding the small, sleek device Uncle Raymond had given me. It was a cloud drive, recovered from a discarded backup phone.

“I have something I need you to hear,” I told Teresa, meeting her gaze steadily.

I pressed play. The first voice was Chloe’s, sharp and insistent. Then Marcus’s, strained and defensive. It was only a few seconds, an audio snippet of a whispered argument.

“You said you’d handle Elena,” Chloe hissed, her voice tinny and distorted, but unmistakable. “Get her out of the way, or your mother’s clinic loses its grant.”

A gasp escaped Teresa’s lips. Her eyes snapped to Marcus, wide with disbelief. The mangos lay forgotten in the kitchen.

Marcus’s face went white. The smirk had vanished.
