17-Year-Old Immigrant Teenager Fights for Her 8-Year-Old Asthma-Stricken Son After Her Close Friend Hides His Inhaler as Punishment, Leading to Emergency 911 Hospitalization and $45,000 Medical Ext...
The ambulance doors hissed open, Toby’s small body already strapped to the gurney, his breath still catching. Paramedics moved quickly around him, their faces grim under the flashing red and blue lights.
Chloe stood on the porch, a small, locked metal box clutched in her hand, her expression perfectly serene.
“Give me the box,” I said, my voice raw, stepping towards her. “Toby’s inhaler is in there.”
She tilted her head, a soft, patronizing smile touching her lips. “This contains his full medical history, Maya. Not just a silly inhaler.”
“I need it,” I insisted, my gaze fixed on the box. I could hear Toby’s weak cough from inside the ambulance.
“Or what?” she asked, her eyes narrowing. “You’ll make a scene? In front of all the neighbors?”
A neighbor’s curtain twitched. A child on a bicycle paused, watching the flashing lights. The world kept moving, indifferent.
“Give me the box number,” I demanded, desperation making my voice shake. “I need to give it to the doctors.”
Chloe sighed, a theatrical gesture. She held the box out, just out of my reach, then pointed to a small, engraved serial number on the side. “It’s 043. The key is in my drawer.”
Her voice was like ice. “Don’t think this changes anything, Maya. You called 911 on family. This is a disgrace.”
I didn’t care about disgrace. I lunged, pulling the box from her hand before she could react, then scrambled into the back of the ambulance.
“His name is Toby Tran,” I told the paramedic, my fingers fumbling with the unfamiliar metal. “He has severe asthma. The box has his medical history. Serial number 043.”
The paramedic nodded, already passing the information to his partner. The siren wailed to life, a guttural cry that echoed in my chest.
Chloe’s impassive face was the last thing I saw as the ambulance pulled away, her words ringing in my ears. “This will cost you everything, Maya.”
I held Toby’s hand, his skin clammy and cool. My son was fighting for breath, and all I could do was cling to the hope that I had just secured the only evidence that could help him. I would protect him. Whatever the cost.
