Chloe’s perfect, controlled expression had completely shattered. She backed away from the bed, her eyes fixed on the documents as if they were venomous snakes. The scent of her expensive perfume, usually so confident, now seemed sickly sweet.

“What do you want, Maya?” she finally managed, her voice hoarse, devoid of its usual patronizing tone. “Money? Is that it?”

“I want Toby protected,” I said, my voice clear and firm. “Permanently.”

I pulled another document from my jacket pocket. It was a simple legal waiver, prepared by a pro bono lawyer at the shelter, stating that Chloe Pham irrevocably surrendered all claims of guardianship, temporary or permanent, over Toby Tran. It also formally released any claims on his medical care or educational decisions.

“Sign this,” I commanded, pushing the paper across the bed towards her. “Sign it, and I will keep these documents to myself. The family will never know your secret.”

She stared at the waiver, then at the paternity test. The multi-million dollar inheritance, her entire social standing, her meticulously crafted life—it all hung by a thread. The thought of losing face, of losing her wealth, was clearly unbearable to her.

“You’re blackmailing me,” she accused, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and fear.

“I’m protecting my son,” I corrected her. “You tried to take him from me, Chloe. You tried to use his illness to manipulate me. This is me putting an end to it.”

Her eyes narrowed, but there was no fight left in them. Only desperation. She knew I held all the cards. The elders, the church, the entire community she had cultivated her image within—they would all turn on her if the truth came out. The will was iron-clad; a disrespected, unfaithful wife would lose everything.

She picked up a pen from her bedside table, her hand shaking so badly she almost dropped it. She signed her name with a flourish of ink, her signature usually so elegant, now a jagged, angry scrawl.

“Now,” I said, picking up the signed waiver, then gathering her secret documents. “I’m taking these. And I’m taking Toby’s things.”

She watched me, silent, defeated. The ghost of her usual smile was gone, replaced by a grimace of pure hatred.

“You won this battle, Maya,” she spat, her voice low. “But you’ve lost your family. You’ve lost everything else.”

I didn’t answer. I just picked up the signed waiver, a solid victory in my hand, and began to pack Toby’s small suitcase. The silence in the room was deafening.
