17-Year-Old Immigrant Teenager Fights for Her 8-Year-Old Asthma-Stricken Son After Her Close Friend Hides His Inhaler as Punishment, Leading to Emergency 911 Hospitalization and $45,000 Medical Ext...
The bright living room lights felt like a spotlight, pinning me in place. Chloe watched me, her gaze cold and assessing, while Auntie Rose and Uncle Bao sat like judges, their faces hardened against me.
“Your place is with your family, Maya,” Auntie Rose said, her voice low and stern. “Not running around in the middle of the night.”
“My place is with my son,” I retorted, my voice trembling but firm. “He’s in the ICU because his inhaler was locked away. His medical records are missing.”
Uncle Bao scoffed, a dismissive sound. “Chloe tells us you have become very disrespectful. You speak back to elders. You do not understand tradition.”
“Tradition doesn’t mean letting a child suffer an asthma attack,” I shot back, the anger bubbling up. “Tradition doesn’t mean holding his life-saving medication hostage.”
Chloe leaned forward, her smile thin. “We simply wanted to teach you responsibility, Maya. You’re a child raising a child. You need guidance.”
“This isn’t guidance,” I spat. “This is manipulation. You hid Toby’s inhaler. You removed his medical files from the emergency box. What kind of guidance is that?”
Auntie Rose slammed her hand on the coffee table, the pho bowl rattling. “Enough! We have heard enough of your insolence. We have decided, as a family, that you are no longer fit to manage Toby’s care.”
My breath hitched. “What are you talking about?”
“Effective immediately,” Uncle Bao stated, pulling a document from a folder on the table, “Chloe will assume temporary guardianship of Toby. Until you prove you can be a responsible, obedient member of this household.”
It was a nightmare, unfolding in front of me. This was Twist 1: Chloe’s plan to prove me unfit and claim guardianship.
“No,” I said, shaking my head. “I will not let you take my son.”
“Then you are no longer part of this family,” Auntie Rose declared, her voice final. “The family fund, the assistance, the roof over your head. All of it is gone.”
My heart ached, but I couldn’t back down. “I don’t care about your fund. I care about Toby.”
“There will be no more opportunities,” Uncle Bao warned, his eyes like stone.
“Where are his medical files, Chloe?” I pressed, my voice unwavering. “Give them to me now, or I’m calling the police again. For real this time.”
Chloe’s eyes flickered, a hint of panic in them. “They’re in my room, in the filing cabinet. But you won’t touch them.”
As they argued amongst themselves, distracted by my threat of the police, I saw my chance. I bolted past them, ignoring their shouts, straight for Chloe’s room.
I yanked open the drawer of her filing cabinet. Buried beneath old tax documents and utility bills, I found it: a thick, blue folder labeled “TOBY TRAN – HEALTH.”
I snatched it, tucking it under my arm, and sprinted for the front door. Their cries echoed behind me.
I ran into the night, Toby’s medical records clutched tight, the cold weight of disownment settling heavily on my shoulders.
