Nineteen-Year-Old Caretaker Fights Her Tyrannical Boss After He Drags Her Four-Year-Old Daughter Toward a Dumpster, Exposing a $450,000 Fraud Scheme and Her Sister's Devastating Betrayal
The force of my tackle sent Garrison stumbling backward, a guttural gasp tearing from his throat. Lily, released from his iron grip, tumbled free, scrambling behind my legs with a frightened whimper. Her pink backpack swayed.
“You lunatic!” Garrison roared, his face purpling. He clapped a hand to his arm, rubbing it furiously as if I’d broken it. “You assaulted me!”
Chloe, who had been watching from the kitchen doorway, flinched but didn’t move. Her eyes darted from Garrison to me, then to the courtyard dumpster, still open and waiting.
“Get out!” I shouted, my voice raw, the words catching in my throat. “You get away from her!”
Garrison straightened, his eyes narrowing to slits. “You’re fired, Maya. Effective immediately.” He paused, a cruel smile twisting his lips. “And I’m filing criminal charges. Assault. Trespassing.”
My stomach dropped. Criminal charges. This wasn’t just about losing my job anymore.
“Give me your phone,” he demanded, his hand outstretched. “Right now. Or I call the police and tell them exactly what you just did.”
My phone. My only lifeline. Lily burrowed deeper against my leg, her small hand clutching the fabric of my jeans. The thought of losing Lily, of Garrison spinning a story to the police before I could, made my blood run cold.
“I’m not giving you anything,” I said, my voice shaking but firm.
Garrison took a step closer, his shadow falling over us. “You think you have a choice, girl? You just laid hands on the owner of this estate. My word against yours. And I assure you, my word carries more weight in this county than yours ever will.”
He gestured vaguely toward the sprawling mansion, the manicured lawns. His kingdom.
“Give me the phone, or you’ll regret it for the rest of your pathetic life.”
He was blocking the path to the main gate. The only exit. My gaze flickered to the main lodge, a massive, imposing structure at the heart of the estate. The staff office was in there. It was risky, but I needed a safe place, a phone, anything.
“Don’t even think about it,” Chloe said, her voice strangely flat, as if she were warning a child not to touch a hot stove. She finally moved, stepping closer to Garrison, her presence a silent reinforcement.
I knew Garrison was stalling, trying to intimidate me. This was my chance.
“No,” I declared, my voice gaining strength. “I’m calling the police myself.”
With Lily still clinging to my leg, I turned and bolted, not for the main gate, but directly for the grand oak doors of the main lodge. I could hear Garrison’s furious roar behind me, followed by the heavy thud of his footsteps.
