Trooper Brody’s gaze shifted from me to Lily, then to the pink tablet peeking out from her abandoned backpack on the floor. He seemed to hesitate, his eyes flicking back to Garrison and the false medical affidavit.

“A child’s tablet?” Garrison scoffed, stepping forward. “Trooper, this is clearly a ploy. She’s desperate. There’s nothing on that thing but cartoons.”

Chloe chimed in, “She’s trying to distract you, Trooper. My sister is very clever when she’s… distressed.”

But Trooper Brody didn’t respond to them. He simply looked at me, then at Lily. Something in his eyes told me he wasn’t fully buying Garrison’s act. He probably dealt with these kinds of “delusional” claims all the time.

Just then, Lily, sensing the shift in attention, pushed off my chest. She slid from my arms, her small feet hitting the polished floor. She trotted over to her backpack, her bright pink tablet a familiar comfort. She picked it up, cradling it in her arms.

“Mama, can I play my game?” she asked, her voice innocent, oblivious to the high stakes of the moment.

Before I could answer, before Garrison could intervene, Lily, with the unerring instinct of a four-year-old, walked directly to Trooper Brody. She reached up, holding out the tablet like an offering.

“You can play my game,” she announced, her big, innocent eyes looking up at him. “It has ponies.”

Trooper Brody knelt down, bringing himself to Lily’s eye level. He took the tablet from her, his fingers brushing hers. He looked at the screen, which displayed a child’s drawing application, colorful and vibrant.

He pressed a button. The screen changed.

And then, a video started playing.

It wasn’t a game. It wasn’t ponies.

It was grainy, shaky footage from the courtyard, clearly recorded by the tablet. The perspective was low, from a child’s height. It showed Garrison. His back was to the camera at first, his voice a muffled roar. Then, he turned.

The video showed him grabbing Lily’s hair, pulling her, dragging her toward the large, green dumpster. His face was contorted, his mouth open in a silent scream. Chloe was visible in the background, a passive, frozen figure, watching without moving. The video captured Garrison’s words, muffled but distinct, about “non-workers” belonging in the “trash.”

The sound filled the tense silence of the office. Garrison’s face drained of all color. Chloe gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. Krenshaw stumbled back, bumping into a bookshelf.

My breath hitched. Lily had been recording the entire time. Her tablet, a simple toy, had become an undeniable witness.

Trooper Brody watched the playback, his jaw tightening with each frame. His expression hardened, shifting from professional detachment to something else entirely. The medical affidavit crumpled in his hand.

He stood up, slowly, his eyes now fixed on Garrison, then Chloe, then Krenshaw. The atmosphere in the room changed, thick with undeniable truth.

“Trooper,” Garrison sputtered, trying to regain his composure, “that’s out of context! She provoked me! It’s a misunderstanding!”

Trooper Brody didn’t respond to Garrison. He looked at the tablet, then at me.

“Is this the video of what happened today?” he asked, his voice low and firm.

“Yes,” I managed, a wave of relief washing over me so powerful it almost buckled my knees. “That’s exactly what happened.”
