Trooper Brody didn’t waste another second. He walked straight past Garrison, past a frozen Chloe, and out the splintered office door. He headed directly for his patrol car, Lily’s pink tablet clutched in his hand.

“Trooper, wait!” Garrison shouted, his voice cracking. He started after him, but Brody didn’t even look back.

I scooped Lily into my arms, holding her tight. She was just playing her game, oblivious to the fact that she had just exposed everything.

We all followed. Garrison, Chloe, Krenshaw, and I. The tension was suffocating. The flashing blue lights of the patrol car pulsed against the twilight sky.

Trooper Brody opened the back door of his cruiser and slid inside, placing Lily’s tablet into a secure dock on the dashboard. The video footage, now larger and clearer, filled the screen, visible to everyone standing outside.

Garrison grabbing Lily’s hair. Garrison dragging her. Garrison screaming. Chloe, standing by. The sound was amplified, echoing across the silent estate. Each frame, each word, was unambiguous. It was raw, unedited, undeniable.

Garrison watched, his face ashen, his bravado completely gone. He looked like a cornered animal.

When the video ended, Trooper Brody exited the vehicle. His face was set in a grim line.

“Richard Garrison Pendelton,” he stated, his voice ringing with authority. “You are under arrest for felony child abuse and assault.”

He produced a pair of handcuffs.

Garrison’s mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out. He looked at Chloe, a silent plea in his eyes.

“No! You can’t!” Chloe suddenly cried out, rushing forward. Her voice was high-pitched, panicked. “It’s all a misunderstanding! Maya just wants his money! She’s been planning this with Donald for weeks!”

Her words hung in the air, thick with accusation. My money. Planning this with Donald.

Trooper Brody paused, his hand on Garrison’s arm. He turned slowly, his eyes fixed on Chloe. “Planning what with Donald?”

Chloe clamped her mouth shut, her eyes wide with horror. She had just let it slip. Her betrayal. Krenshaw’s involvement. It was all out in the open. Garrison glared at her, a look of pure hatred on his face.

“Trooper,” I said, my voice surprisingly steady despite the tremor in my chest. “When I was locked in the office, I found something else.”

I reached into my waistband, pulling out my tablet. I navigated to the photos I had taken, the ones of the forged trust fund transfer documents, the ones with Donald Krenshaw’s notary seal.

“Chloe isn’t wrong about one thing,” I continued, holding up the tablet for Trooper Brody to see. “I do want my money back. My $450,000 trust fund that Garrison and my sister, with the help of Donald Krenshaw, were trying to steal from me.”

Trooper Brody looked at the images on my tablet, his expression grim. He looked at Krenshaw, who was visibly trembling.

“Mr. Krenshaw,” Trooper Brody said, “I think we need to have a serious conversation about your notary services.”

He cuffed Garrison, the metallic click sounding like a gavel in the night. Garrison’s head hung low. He was no longer the tyrannical boss, but a common criminal.
