Chapter 12: An Uncertain but Safe Future

Exactly nine days later, the air in the sterile grey bus terminal hung heavy with the smell of exhaust and cheap coffee. Lily sat beside me on the worn plastic bench, meticulously arranging her small collection of plastic animals on her lap. Her bright pink tablet, now a symbol of her unwitting bravery, was tucked away in my backpack.

My own backpack, lightweight and containing little more than essentials, rested at my feet. I had nothing but the clothes on my back, Lily’s hand in mine, and the bus tickets to a small town three states away – a place where no one knew the name Pendelton, or Garrison, or Chloe, or Krenshaw.

My phone vibrated, startling me. It was a text from Ms. Evans, my court-appointed advocate. A brief, functional message, as promised.

“Garrison transferred to maximum security, Attica Correctional. Chloe probation terms finalized, reporting to officer next week. Krenshaw processed, awaiting federal transfer. You’re clear. Stay safe, Maya.”

I read the message twice, a final, concrete confirmation. Garrison was in Attica. Chloe was on probation. Krenshaw was awaiting transfer. It was over. The legal battles, the fear, the constant threat. All of it.

I typed a quick “Thank you for everything” to Ms. Evans. Then, with a deep breath, I selected “Delete conversation.”

I looked at my phone, the small device that had held my stolen evidence, that had been my only connection to the outside world during my confinement. It felt heavy, a relic of a past I was determined to leave behind. I powered it off, the screen going dark, its memory wiped clean. I would get a new, simple phone in our new town.

“Mama, is our bus here?” Lily asked, looking up at me, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

“Almost, sweetheart,” I said, forcing a smile. I looked around the terminal, at the weary travelers, the hurried goodbyes, the promise of new destinations.

Our gate number flashed on the electronic board. “Bus 214 now boarding for Willow Creek.”

I stood, taking Lily’s hand. She picked up her plastic animals, tucking them into a small pouch. My future was uncertain, without a single dollar from my past, but as we walked towards the boarding gate, stepping onto that greyhound bus, I knew one thing with absolute certainty: we were safe, and we were finally free.
