Chapter 17: A Call on the Shoulder

The first sliver of dawn was just kissing the tops of the North Carolina pines when the two black sedans pulled up the long, gravel driveway of the Albright estate. They stopped short of the grand iron gates, which were still closed and imposing, as if guarding a secret.

I watched from my kitchen window, a mug of cold coffee in my hand, as two state trooper cruisers followed, parking neatly behind the sedans.

A figure in a dark federal uniform stepped out of the lead sedan. Inspector Nathan Cross.

He walked with purpose toward the heavy gates. I felt a tremor of anticipation, a tightening in my chest that had nothing to do with fear, and everything to do with a desperate kind of hope.

The doorbell chimed a moment later, a polite, distant sound from the mansion’s front door. I imagined Evelyn Albright, still in her silk robe, answering with her usual air of supreme confidence.

She would expect Deputy Brody, maybe a local animal control officer, someone she could easily dismiss or charm. Someone whose career depended on not offending the Albright name in Oakhaven.

I watched through the sheer lace curtain as the heavy oak door swung open. Evelyn stood there, regal even at this hour, her hair perfectly coiffed.

Her smile was practiced, tight-lipped. It was the same smile she’d given Maya at the dinner table last night, full of cold amusement.

Inspector Cross stepped forward, his posture unwavering. He held up a thick, official-looking document.

“Evelyn Albright?” he asked, his voice carrying clearly even from my vantage point.

Evelyn nodded slowly, her eyes narrowed. The smile didn’t quite reach her lips anymore.

“I am Inspector Nathan Cross, USDA,” he stated, his gaze unblinking. “We have an emergency federal search warrant for the Albright Estate. Animal welfare, agricultural compliance, and related concerns.”

He gestured to the two state troopers who were already moving past the still-gaping front door. Two other federal agents started walking toward the outbuildings.

Evelyn’s composure, usually as solid as granite, visibly fractured. Her face went slack.

“Federal?” she stammered, her voice suddenly thin. “This is preposterous. You can’t just barge in here. I’ll call the sheriff myself.”

Cross did not break eye contact. “The warrant is signed, Mrs. Albright. We’re acting under federal jurisdiction. Any interference will result in immediate arrest.”

He stepped past her, the document held firmly in his hand, as the state troopers fanned out, their radios crackling with low voices. Evelyn stood frozen in the doorway, her carefully constructed world suddenly invaded by an authority she could not control, could not sweet-talk, could not threaten.

Her misunderstanding of who held the real power in this situation was painfully clear on her face. The look was pure shock. It was a victory, small but significant, and I gripped my cold coffee mug tighter, ready for what came next.
