Chapter 17: A Call on the Shoulder

The federal agents had been on the estate for two full days now. They had combed through outbuildings, taken samples, and interviewed staff. But there was still no sign of Toby.

I knew Evelyn and Arthur wouldn’t give up easily. The smear campaign was just the start. They wanted to strip me of everything Mark had left me, including my standing in the town.

Their next move, I suspected, would be financial. I remembered Evelyn’s casual comment months ago about “reassessing” the property value.

I drove to the county records office, a small brick building downtown that smelled of old paper and dust. The clerk, a kind woman named Susan who knew my family, looked at me with a worried expression.

“Clara, are you okay?” she asked softly. “I’ve heard things.”

I forced a smile. “Just looking into some property records, Susan. Mark’s estate, you know.”

She nodded and directed me to the public computers. I searched for “Albright Estate.” Pages of documents scrolled by: deeds, transfers, tax assessments.

I found my late husband’s inherited parcel, the one where our smaller house stood. The land was part of the original Albright holdings, but it was legally distinct, my separate inheritance from Mark.

I clicked open the most recent appraisal document. It was dated just three months after Mark’s death. My breath hitched.

The property, which had been valued at $450,000 when Mark and I moved in, was now listed at a paltry $170,000. It was a reduction of $280,000.

My hands trembled as I scrolled to the bottom. The signature was unmistakable: Wayne Galloway, County Land Appraiser.

Galloway was known to be a friend of Arthur’s, a man who frequented their exclusive hunting club. It was a clear, calculated move to devalue my inheritance, to make it worthless, forcing me to sell for a fraction of its worth.

They wanted to pressure me, to make me financially vulnerable so I would concede custody of Maya and walk away with nothing. This was the exact kind of manipulation I expected from them.

I printed out the document, the crisp white paper feeling cold in my hand. It was solid proof of their intent to defraud.

I drove straight to the estate, pulling up to the main gate where Deputy Brody was now stationed, looking less comfortable than before. He let me through without question.

Inspector Cross was speaking with one of his agents near the main house. I walked directly up to him, the appraisal document held out.

“Inspector,” I said, my voice steady despite the rage thrumming beneath my skin. “I believe you’ll want to see this. It’s a forged appraisal document, reducing my late husband’s property value by over a quarter-million dollars. Signed by Wayne Galloway, a close associate of Arthur Albright.”

Cross took the papers, his brow furrowing as he scanned them. His eyes, already serious, hardened. He looked from the document to me, then back to the document.

“This changes things, Mrs. Albright,” he said, the words quiet but firm. “This brings us into a different legal territory.”

The realization that they weren’t just psychologically abusing me, but actively trying to steal my home and financial future, solidified my resolve. I had found their financial weak spot.
