Chapter 24: The Next Morning

Leo’s SUV pulled into the cabin’s driveway, his and Valerie’s faces visible through the windshield. I took one last steadying breath. This was it. The calm before the storm. I walked to the porch, feigning a polite smile as they emerged from the car. Leo looked smug, his arm draped possessively around Valerie’s waist. Valerie, however, seemed a bit more subdued, her eyes scanning the rustic cabin with a hint of nervousness.

“Amelia,” Leo said, his voice oozing false charm, “thanks for arranging this. Valerie, this is Clara’s sister, Amelia. Amelia, this is Valerie.” He acted as if they hadn’t already met, a petty act of control.

“We’ve met,” I replied, my smile not reaching my eyes. Valerie gave me a tight, uncomfortable nod, avoiding my gaze. The tension was already palpable, a thick current running beneath the polite surface.

We went inside. Leo immediately headed for the sofa, making himself at home, while Valerie looked around, her eyes lingering on the framed photo of Clara and me on the mantel. I could see her discomfort, a tiny crack in her carefully constructed facade. The picture itself was a small, specific cruelty, a reminder of the life Leo had so easily discarded.

“So,” Leo began, stretching out on the sofa, reaching for a magazine from the stack on the coffee table. His fingers brushed against the tucked-away envelope. “What’s this urgent discussion about Clara’s memorial? I thought we’d already settled everything.” He picked up the magazine, and with it, the forensic report.

His eyes fell upon the official seal of the document examiner. His casual demeanor faltered, his expression shifting from bored indifference to a flicker of alarm. He quickly flipped the envelope over, as if it were contaminated.

“What’s this, Amelia?” he asked, his voice now devoid of charm, a sharp edge creeping in.

“That,” I said, my voice calm and clear, “is a forensic report confirming Clara’s signature on the altered beneficiary form was a forgery.”

Leo’s face paled, but he quickly recovered, a sneer twisting his lips. “Forgery? Don’t be absurd, Amelia. You’re unhinged. You’re so consumed by grief you’re seeing things. This is just another one of your paranoid delusions.” He cast a glance at Valerie, a silent plea for her to back him up.

Valerie, however, looked increasingly uncomfortable. She shifted in her seat, her gaze still drawn to the framed photo of Clara and me.

“No paranoia, Leo,” I countered, pushing the records of his gambling debts towards him. “Just facts. €42,000 in gambling debts, facing foreclosure. You needed money. And Clara’s life insurance was your solution.”

Leo scoffed, a forced laugh. “Ridiculous. My finances are my business. And those are old debts, long settled. You’re grasping at straws, Amelia. You’re trying to smear my name, to take my children. I warned you about legal action.” He reached for a different magazine, trying to dismiss the evidence, but his hand was trembling slightly.

Just then, as he tried to project an image of righteous indignation, Valerie’s eyes widened. She had spotted something tucked between the cushions of a nearby armchair, something I had strategically placed. It was an old, faded hospital wristband, still bearing Clara’s name and hospital ID. It was a tangible, poignant relic of Clara’s final hours, a specific, personal touch.

Valerie’s hand shot out, grabbing the wristband. She stared at it, her face going ashen. A look of dawning horror, and a flicker of memory, crossed her features.

“What is it, Val?” Leo asked, annoyed, his voice betraying his frustration at her distraction.

Valerie didn’t answer him. She looked at the wristband, then at Leo, then at me. Her expression was one of profound shock, as if a piece of a puzzle had just clicked into place, revealing a horrifying truth she had refused to see. The cabin, filled with Clara’s memories, was starting to unravel Leo’s carefully constructed lies, starting with his own accomplice. The confrontation was just beginning, and the ground beneath Leo was about to crack open.
