Chapter 22: Following Sunday

The kitchen table felt like a battlefield, the untouched scones a testament to the bitter confrontation. I felt a stinging mix of anger and hurt as I processed my children’s secret investigation. My own children, undermining my judgment.

“How could you do this?” I finally managed, my voice trembling with indignation. “Hiring a private investigator? Spying on Victor?”

Sarah reached across the table, trying to take my hand, but I pulled away.

“Mom, we’re not spying,” she insisted, her voice soft but firm. “We’re protecting you.”

“Protecting me from what?” I shot back. “From happiness? From a chance at a new life?”

David sighed, running a hand over his face.

“From a man who might not be who he seems,” he replied, his tone weary. “We’ve seen too many stories.”

I felt a wave of profound disappointment. It was a familiar, painful feeling, reminiscent of past times when my choices had been questioned, when I’d felt like I always had to fight for my independence.

“So, you think I’m just some naive old woman?” I challenged, my voice laced with bitterness. “Someone who can’t see what’s right in front of her?”

Their silence was more damning than any accusation.

Suddenly, Victor’s cheerful voice echoed from the hallway.

“Eleanor, my darling! Is everything alright in here?”

His entrance brought an abrupt halt to our heated exchange. He walked into the kitchen, a radiant smile on his face, oblivious to the tension that hung heavy in the air. He looked from my flushed face to Sarah and David’s grim expressions. His smile faltered just slightly.

“Everything’s just fine, Victor,” I said, forcing a smile that felt brittle. “Just discussing some last-minute wedding details.”

Victor, ever perceptive, raised an eyebrow. He cast a quick, assessing glance at Sarah and David.

“Well, perhaps we should continue this discussion later, my love,” he suggested smoothly. “These children of yours always have such strong opinions, don’t they?”

His words, seemingly innocent, held a subtle barb, a playful dismissal of their concerns that felt like a personal slight to them, and indirectly, to me. My children exchanged a look that spoke volumes.

“Victor, we were just expressing our concerns about some things,” Sarah began, her voice edged with frustration.

But Victor cut her off with a charming, dismissive wave of his hand.

“Concerns, yes, yes,” he chuckled, his arm already slipping around my waist. “Always concerns. But Eleanor and I, we are old enough to make our own decisions, wouldn’t you agree?”

He squeezed my side, a gesture that felt more possessive than affectionate. I stiffened slightly, a new discomfort stirring within me. He was deliberately shutting them down, making me feel like I needed to choose a side.

“We just want what’s best for Mom,” David stated, his voice calm but resolute.

Victor’s smile tightened, just a fraction.

“Of course you do,” he purred, his eyes glinting. “And what’s best for Eleanor is a happy, secure future, surrounded by love. Not suspicion and negativity, wouldn’t you agree?”

He turned to me, his gaze full of warmth, attempting to draw me into his narrative. He was expertly driving a wedge between me and my children, making me feel isolated. It was a familiar pattern from my previous difficult marriage, a warning bell I tried to silence.

“Children,” he continued, turning back to Sarah and David, “Eleanor has worked hard for everything she has. She deserves to enjoy it without constant questioning. Perhaps you should trust her judgment a little more.”

He made it sound like they were selfishly trying to control me, or worse, that they were only interested in my assets. It was a cruel insinuation, carefully crafted to wound. The idea that my own children would be so motivated was unthinkable.

“Victor, that’s unfair,” Sarah protested, her face reddening.

“Is it?” Victor countered, his tone still light, yet undeniably dismissive. “Or perhaps it’s just the truth that sometimes hurts the most?”

He tightened his grip on my waist again, pulling me closer. It was a clear display of ownership.

“Darling,” he murmured to me, ignoring my children now, “I think we need a change of scenery. Away from all this… negativity. Just the two of us.”

He smiled, a calculated flash of charm.

“A romantic weekend getaway,” he proposed, his voice soft and inviting. “We could drive up to the coast. Clear our heads. Reconnect.”

The suggestion, made in front of my children, felt like a deliberate move to further alienate them. It was a petty cruelty, using my longing for connection against me and against them. My children stared at him, their expressions a mixture of anger and despair. I knew they saw through his manipulative tactic, even if I was still struggling to accept it myself. The thought of leaving with Victor, while my children stood there, wounded and accused, made my stomach clench. But the lure of escaping the tension, even temporarily, was strong.
