At Her Wedding, a Widow Learns Her Charming Groom Has Deep Ties to an Organized Crime Family, Thanks to Recovered Text Messages
The clatter of my fallen bouquet was a gunshot in the sudden, internal silence of the moment. The white rose petals lay scattered on the carpet, stark against the pristine white. Victor, standing beside me, had seen the messages too. His eyes, darting from the printouts in my hand to Arthur, then back to my ashen face, confirmed it. He knew.
His perfectly composed facade shattered. The color drained from his face, leaving it a sickly gray. A muscle twitched violently in his jaw, betraying the raw panic churning beneath his polished exterior. His eyes, usually so charming, now flickered with unadulterated fear.
He took a half step towards me, his hand reaching out, as if to snatch the evidence.
“Eleanor, I can explain,” he mumbled, his voice barely audible, a ragged whisper devoid of its usual smoothness. The words were empty, meaningless.
But then his eyes darted to the guests again, many of them his “associates,” their faces impassive but watchful. He made eye contact with one of them, a burly man with a sharp gaze who had been seated near the front. The man gave a barely perceptible shake of his head, a silent signal. It was a specific, physical communication that sealed Victor’s choice.
Victor froze, his reaching hand dropping uselessly to his side. His gaze swept over the stunned faces of the guests, then landed on Sarah and David, standing together, their expressions a mixture of relief and grim satisfaction. His shoulders slumped, the air deflating from him like a pricked balloon. He realized the full extent of his exposure. There was no recovery from this. No plausible explanation.
With a sudden, abrupt movement, he turned away from me, away from the altar, away from his shattered scheme. He didn’t speak another word. He just walked. Quickly. His once confident stride now seemed hurried, almost a stumble. He moved past the bewildered officiant, past the gasping guests, a wave of confusion and shock rippling through the meticulously arranged ceremony.
He didn’t look back.
The music, which had briefly faltered, picked up again, a jarring, inappropriate accompaniment to his ignominious retreat. Victor disappeared down the garden path, swallowed by the lush greenery, leaving behind a profound silence, broken only by the murmuring of the stunned crowd and the distant strains of the wedding march. The man I was meant to marry was gone, his betrayal laid bare, his exit a chaotic, public humiliation, leaving me standing alone at the altar, amidst scattered rose petals, the damning evidence clutched in my hand.
