Chapter 22: Following Sunday

The murmur of the assembled guests hushed as Victor and I reached the start of the aisle. The officiant, a kindly woman with a gentle smile, stepped forward, her hands clasped. The beautiful music swelled, signaling the beginning of the ceremony. Victor’s grip tightened on my arm, his smile fixed, his eyes sweeping across the crowd, possessive and triumphant.

“Dearly beloved,” the officiant began, her voice resonating softly through the garden.

My heart pounded, a drumbeat against my ribs. This was it. The moment I had dreaded and planned for. My eyes darted through the crowd one last time, a desperate search.

Then I saw him.

A well-dressed man, unassuming in a dark suit, detached himself from a group of guests near the back. It was Arthur Finch. He moved with a quiet purpose, his gaze fixed directly on me. He held a single, plain white envelope in his hand.

Victor’s head, which had been turned towards the officiant, subtly shifted. His eyes, sharp and quick, caught sight of Arthur. The fixed smile on his face faltered, just for a fraction of a second. A muscle twitched in his jaw.

He leaned in closer to me, his breath warm against my ear.

“Don’t let anything spoil our perfect day, my love,” he whispered, his voice smooth, but laced with an undeniable edge. His grip on my arm became almost painfully tight, a desperate, silent warning.

Arthur continued his slow, measured approach, weaving through the seated guests. Every step felt magnified, every second stretched into an eternity. The music played on, a beautiful, haunting melody, oblivious to the drama unfolding.

My children, Sarah and David, had spotted Arthur too. Their faces, previously etched with worry, now held a fierce, determined hope. They exchanged quick, knowing glances, their attention riveted on the approaching man.

Victor’s eyes darted from Arthur, to my children, and then back to me. He knew. He could feel the net closing in. His perfect facade was cracking under the immense pressure. He tried to pull me slightly closer, to shield me, perhaps, or to prevent me from moving. It was a specific, physical attempt to maintain control.

Arthur was almost upon us now, just a few feet away. His expression was serious, professional, his eyes communicating a silent message of urgency. The plain white envelope seemed to glow in his hand, holding the culmination of weeks of fear, suspicion, and desperate investigation. The fate of my future, and perhaps my family’s, rested within its flimsy paper walls. The officiant paused, sensing the subtle shift in atmosphere, her gaze briefly flickering towards Arthur. The moment was suspended, charged with an unbearable tension, on the precipice of a devastating truth.
