Chapter 22: Following Sunday

The coastal drive with Victor should have been relaxing, but the tension from the kitchen lingered, a knot in my stomach. The ocean air did little to clear my head. We checked into a charming bed and breakfast overlooking the churning waves, the picturesque setting jarring with my inner turmoil.

Victor, ever the charmer, was attentive, holding my hand, sharing anecdotes, and trying to rekindle the easy affection we once had. I feigned enjoyment, but my mind kept replaying Sarah and David’s accusations, the article about Silas, and Victor’s dismissive remarks.

We were sitting on the quaint porch swing that evening, watching the sunset paint the sky in fiery hues. Victor was engrossed in his phone, occasionally chuckling at something on the screen. He often did this, his attention frequently drawn to his device.

Suddenly, a notification sound chimed from my own phone, which I’d left on the small table beside me. I glanced down. It was a text message from Victor.

My brow furrowed in confusion. Why would he text me when we were sitting right next to each other?

I picked up my phone, my fingers brushing against the cool metal. The message preview flashed across the screen for just a second before it vanished.

But I had seen it.

The words burned into my memory: “Sarah and her greedy nature always trying to interfere. Her mother’s judgment is so easily swayed.”

My breath hitched in my throat. I looked up, my eyes darting to Victor. He was still smiling at his phone, seemingly oblivious. A cold dread seeped into my bones.

Then, just as quickly as it had appeared, another text popped up: “Oops! Wrong recipient, darling! So sorry. Meant that for an old business associate I’m trying to shake off. Technology, eh?”

He lowered his phone, his smile still in place, but his eyes seemed to flicker with a hint of calculation.

“Terribly sorry, my love,” he said, feigning an embarrassed laugh. “Just an old colleague, trying to get me to invest in something shady. You know how it is.”

He offered a casual shrug, a performance I might have believed just days ago. But now, the words he had “accidentally” sent echoed in my mind, a cruel, personal jab at my daughter and, more subtly, at me. It was a dismissal of Sarah’s genuine concern, painting her as selfish, and it struck at my own intelligence and independence.

“It’s quite alright,” I replied, my voice feeling strangely detached. I forced myself to smile, hoping he couldn’t see the turmoil raging beneath my composed facade.

A small, insidious seed of doubt about Victor began to sprout, taking root in the fertile ground of my earlier unease. This wasn’t just a misdirected text; it was a window into his true feelings about my children, and perhaps, about me. He saw Sarah as greedy, and me as naive. The casual dismissal, the quick cover-up – it was a calculated move, a subtle act of personal cruelty designed to further isolate me from my own family, to erode my trust in them.

My mind raced, replaying the exact phrasing. “Her mother’s judgment is so easily swayed.” He thought I was weak. He thought I was a puppet. The casual cruelty of his words cut deeper than any overt insult.

“Are you sure you’re feeling alright, darling?” Victor asked, his voice laced with concern, but his eyes still held that unsettling flicker. “You look a little pale.”

“Just the sea air, I suppose,” I lied, pulling my shawl tighter around my shoulders, despite the mild evening.

I knew, with a chilling certainty, that this was no accident. It was a deliberate ploy, a cruel attempt to poison my relationship with Sarah, to make me distrust my own daughter. The “old business associate” was a thinly veiled lie, a mockery of my intelligence. The sunset, once beautiful, now seemed to mock me with its false serenity.
