Chapter 9: Sunday Solitude

Margaret began her work immediately. Days bled into weeks, each one bringing me new, unsettling pieces of information. I met with her discreetly, always away from my main office, in small, nondescript cafes.

“Her public profile is immaculate, Eleanor,” Margaret reported during our second meeting, sipping a black coffee. “Everything suggests a comfortable, respectable upbringing. Private schools, a minor in art history from a good university, a short stint at an interior design firm, then volunteer work.”

I nodded. That was Serena’s public facade, carefully cultivated. “And beneath the surface?”

“That’s where it gets interesting,” Margaret leaned forward, lowering her voice slightly. “Over the past three years, Serena has taken out several personal loans. Not huge amounts, but consistently. From different lenders. Small, private entities, almost impossible to track individually.”

“What’s the total?” I asked, my gaze fixed on her.

“Roughly two hundred thousand dollars, Eleanor. Over a thirty-six-month period. She’s repaying them, but it’s tight. Her declared income doesn’t quite support this level of debt servicing alongside her lifestyle.”

Two hundred thousand dollars. It wasn’t life-altering money for Michael, but it was a substantial sum for someone who presented herself as financially secure. This was the first concrete crack in Serena’s veneer of effortless affluence.

“Any large purchases that would explain it?”

“Nothing. No new property, no major investments. It’s almost as if the money just… vanished.” Margaret paused. “It suggests a steady, quiet drain. Something recurring.”

“Find out where that money went,” I instructed. “Every penny.”

The conversation shifted to Serena’s family. Her father, a seemingly upstanding local businessman, had passed away five years prior. Her mother was a socialite, always impeccably dressed, but without any discernible personal income beyond her late husband’s estate.

“No red flags there, at first glance,” Margaret concluded.

But the loans. They gnawed at me. Serena’s desperation was far greater than I had first imagined. It hinted at a secret, a vice, something she had to constantly feed.

A few days later, Aunt Caroline called me. She was always good for a chat, a pleasant stream of local gossip and family updates. I braced myself for another mention of Michael and Serena, but something else she said caught my attention.

“Oh, Eleanor, you know who I saw the other day?” Aunt Caroline chirped, her voice bright. “Robert Harding. Serena’s uncle. Haven’t seen him in ages! You know, he and Serena’s late father, Marcus, they used to be in business together way back when.”

My mind immediately latched onto the name. Uncle Robert Harding. Estranged. Business partner with Serena’s late father.

“Really?” I feigned casual interest. “I didn’t realize.”

“Oh yes! Small-time property development, if I recall. Though Robert always seemed a bit… particular about it. Didn’t like to talk much about those days. Never came to any of the family functions after Marcus passed. Always a bit of a recluse, that one.”

“Interesting,” I mused. “Did he ever mention anything specific about their business?”

“Goodness no, Eleanor, you know Robert. Tight-lipped as they come. Always said his brother-in-law, Marcus, had a ‘unique’ way of doing things. Whatever that meant.” Aunt Caroline chuckled. “I wouldn’t pry. He gets quite huffy.”

A ‘unique’ way of doing things. That phrase echoed in my mind. Coupled with Serena’s hidden debts, it created a picture. A pattern.

“Thank you, Caroline,” I said, genuinely. “That’s good to know.”

The call ended, but my thoughts raced. A recluse. Tight-lipped. Old business dealings with a father who had a “unique” way of doing things. And Serena’s current, unexplained financial black hole.

It was too much of a coincidence. I had a new lead.

I contacted Margaret again. “Find out where Robert Harding lives. Discreetly. And his routine. I need to arrange an ‘accidental’ encounter.”

“An accidental encounter?” Margaret’s voice held a note of amusement. She understood.

“Yes. And keep digging on those loans. I have a hunch they’re connected to something more specific than general overspending.”

The next few days were a blur of research and careful planning. Margaret discovered that Robert Harding lived a quiet life in a small town about an hour’s drive from the city, frequenting the same local diner every Tuesday for breakfast. It was perfect. An unexpected encounter, far from the prying eyes of the city’s social circles.

On the following Tuesday, I drove out to the town. I dressed conservatively, in a simple cashmere sweater and slacks, looking like a prosperous but unpretentious visitor. I arrived at the diner just as Robert, a man with a tired face and sharp, wary eyes, was settling into his usual booth. He was older than I expected, with silver hair and a deeply lined face that spoke of a life lived with little joy.

I took a booth a few tables away, ordering only coffee, and pretended to read a local newspaper. I observed him. He ate slowly, methodically, seemingly lost in his own thoughts. He seemed a man carrying a heavy load, but one he preferred to bear alone.

After he had finished, and just as he was signaling for the check, I “accidentally” dropped my newspaper on the floor, letting it slide directly towards his table.

He looked up, startled by the sound. His eyes, a pale blue, fixed on me.

“Oh, I’m so terribly sorry,” I said, rising gracefully. “How clumsy of me.”

I bent to retrieve it, making sure our paths would cross. “Mr. Harding, isn’t it?” I asked, feigning recognition. “Robert Harding?”

He frowned, his eyes narrowing. “Do I know you?” His voice was gravelly, unused.

“Eleanor Beaumont,” I offered, extending my hand. “Michael Beaumont’s mother. We met briefly once, at a charity event, many years ago. You were with Marcus.”

His hand, surprisingly firm, clasped mine for a moment. “Marcus. Yes. It’s been a long time.” He looked me over, clearly trying to place me, his memory failing.

“Indeed,” I replied, letting a hint of melancholy enter my voice. “It’s a small world. What brings you out to this charming town?”

He shrugged. “Live here. Been here for years.” He clearly wasn’t one for small talk.

“I imagine you must be excited for Serena and Michael’s wedding,” I pressed gently. “Serena is such a lovely girl.”

His expression flickered. A flicker of something I couldn’t quite decipher. Resentment? Disgust?

“Serena,” he said, the name tasting bitter on his tongue. “Lovely, yes.” The sarcasm was barely concealed.

“I confess, I was quite surprised to hear you and Marcus were partners,” I continued, pressing just a little harder. “He always spoke so highly of you.” This was a bluff. Aunt Caroline said he was tight-lipped.

He snorted. “Marcus was good at talking. Less good at… the details.”

“The details?” I repeated, raising an eyebrow in innocent inquiry.

He looked around the diner, as if checking for eavesdroppers. “Look, Mrs. Beaumont,” he said, lowering his voice. “I don’t get involved with that family anymore. Haven’t for years. Not after Marcus. Too many… complications.”

“Complications?” I pushed, sensing a breakthrough. “I only ask because Michael is such a good boy. And I care about his future. Any parent would.”

He sighed, running a hand over his tired face. “Marcus was… ambitious. Very ambitious. And not always careful about how he got what he wanted. He cut corners. A lot of corners. Especially with land deals. Shell companies. Obscure holdings.”

My heart hammered. Shell companies. Obscure holdings. This was it.

“And Serena?” I asked, keeping my voice soft, almost sympathetic. “Did she learn from him?”

He leaned forward, his eyes fixed on mine. “Serena is exactly like her father. More so, perhaps. She has his ambition, his greed, but none of his charm. And she’s far more ruthless. She’ll step on anyone to get what she wants. Family or not.”

That stung. His words confirmed my deepest fears about Serena.

“He left her something, didn’t he?” I ventured, a shot in the dark based on Margaret’s findings of his business. “Some of those ‘obscure holdings’?”

He hesitated, then gave a curt nod. “A dormant shell company. With a few… peculiar assets. I told Marcus to get rid of it. Too risky. But he always thought he was smarter than everyone else.”

“Do you know the name of the company?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

He looked at me, a long, assessing look. “Why are you asking, Mrs. Beaumont? You suspect something, don’t you?”

“I suspect,” I said, meeting his gaze squarely, “that my son is about to marry a woman who is not who she pretends to be. And that her ‘peculiar assets’ may well be part of the problem.”

He considered this. A grim smile touched his lips. “It’s called ‘Harding Property Solutions LLC.’ Don’t ask me what it does. Or what it holds. I washed my hands of it years ago.” He paused. “But if Serena is involved with it, I’d suggest you protect your son very carefully. She inherited her father’s knack for finding value in places no one else would look. Or in places no one else *should* look.”

He stood up, signaling to the waitress. “That’s all I have for you, Mrs. Beaumont. I hope you find what you’re looking for. But be warned, it won’t be pleasant.”

With that, he paid his bill and walked out of the diner, leaving me with a cold cup of coffee and a chilling new piece of the puzzle. Harding Property Solutions LLC. And a clear warning about Serena’s ruthlessness. The two hundred thousand dollars in unexplained loans suddenly made a terrifying kind of sense. She was desperate, and she had a history, a legacy of “peculiar assets” to draw upon. The game had just become much more dangerous.
