Chapter 9: Sunday Solitude

On the following Sunday, the world felt quiet. Too quiet. I sat alone in my sunroom, the morning light streaming through the large windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. A mug of chamomile tea, usually comforting, grew cold in my hands.

The local newspapers, discreetly left on my doorstep by my assistant, lay folded on the coffee table. The headlines were subdued, but the message was clear. “Prominent Engagement Called Off Abruptly,” one read, beneath a small, grainy photo of Serena looking radiant. Another spoke of “Unconfirmed Reports of Financial Irregularities Linked to Socialite.” The news was spreading, a quiet wildfire. Serena Harding’s carefully constructed life was indeed collapsing, not with a bang, but with the quiet, devastating efficiency of systemic consequence. The authorities would soon be looking into those forged deeds, those shell companies, those inexplicable loans. Her reputation, her social standing, her future—all were irrevocably gone.

But there was no joy in it for me. No triumph. Just an aching emptiness.

I had done what I set out to do. I had protected Michael. I had exposed the truth. But at what cost? Michael hadn’t called. He hadn’t returned any of my messages. His silence was louder than any accusation, heavier than any argument. He needed space, he had said. And in that space, a chasm had opened.

I reflected on my choices, on the path I had taken. My own difficult past, the betrayals I had endured, had forged a certain ruthlessness in me, a determination to never be helpless again, to always see the hidden motives. That past had given me the strength to act, to push, to uncover. But it had also made me incapable of letting go, of trusting. It had alienated me, even from the one I loved most. I had protected Michael from a predator, but perhaps I had become a kind of wolf myself, in his eyes.

I stood up from my chair, the chill from the cold tea seeping into my fingers. I walked to a small potted orchid on the windowsill, its delicate purple blooms a splash of color against the stark green leaves. I carefully checked its soil, running a finger over the damp earth. It needed care, precise and measured.

I picked up a tiny silver spoon, adding a single, measured spoonful of water to the base of the plant. Not too much, not too little. Just enough to sustain it.

Sometimes, protecting the ones you love means facing the painful truth that you can’t keep them close afterward.
