The Rottweiler continued its low, menacing growl, keeping Derek pinned against the fence. His face was pale, a thin bead of sweat tracing a path down his temple. He didn’t dare move, his gaze locked on the powerful animal guarding the torn briefcase.

My eyes scanned the scattered documents. Most were the usual corporate fare: deeds, transfer forms, Holbrook Holdings letterheads. But then I saw it. The small, red-clipped folder. It had landed face down, but the corner of a formal document peeked out.

It looked official. Medical, perhaps.

I moved quickly. The gravel shifted under my new shoes. I knelt, ignoring the sharp stones pressing into my knees through my slacks. My fingers trembled slightly as I reached for the folder.

Derek made a sudden movement, a half-stifled shout.

“Leave those!” he choked out, his voice tight with panic.

The alpha Rottweiler responded instantly, a sharper, more aggressive bark echoing through the compound. Derek froze again, shrinking further against the chain-link.

Eleanor remained silent. She watched my every move from her spot inside the kennel, her gaze unwavering.

My fingers closed around the red folder. It felt surprisingly heavy. I pulled it free from the heap of documents, brushing off a few specks of dirt. The cover was plain, no identifying marks.

I flipped it open.

The first page was a header: “Greenwich Advanced Medical Diagnostics.” Below it, in bold, clinical font: “CONFIDENTIAL PATERNITY REPORT.”

My breath hitched. Paternity? Here? Now?

My eyes raced down the page, skipping past medical jargon and complex percentages. I found the names. Eleanor Holbrook. Derek Holbrook. And then the conclusion, stark and undeniable:

“Probability of Paternity (Eleanor Holbrook & Derek Holbrook): 0.00%.”

My hand flew to my mouth, stifling a gasp. It felt like the air had been punched out of my lungs.

Derek. Not Eleanor’s son.

The world tilted. All the years, all the family dinners, all the holiday photos. Every shared memory, every claim to the Holbrook name, it was all a lie.

The Rottweiler still growled, its focus on Derek. But Derek’s eyes were on me, wide with a raw, desperate fear I’d never seen before. He knew what I had.

I gripped the document tighter, the paper crinkling in my trembling hand. This wasn’t just a corporate battle anymore. This was a seismic family secret, exploded into the open on dirty gravel.

And Eleanor, my mother, who had been locked in this kennel by a man who wasn’t her son, still watched, her face like stone. No surprise, no shock. Just a quiet, unnerving observation.
