The DNA report felt like a live wire in my hand, buzzing with unspoken truths. Derek watched me, his face a mosaic of terror and rage. He knew the implications of that single sheet of paper.

“Maya, give me that!” he hissed, trying to push away from the Rottweiler, which responded with a low snarl, nudging him back against the fence.

I ignored him. My gaze flicked to Eleanor. Her expression remained unnervingly calm, as if she’d expected this.

Just then, a commotion erupted near the main gate of the compound. A security guard, his walkie-talkie squawking, rushed in. Behind him, two more estate staff members, their faces confused and anxious, peered around the corner.

And then, I saw her. A woman with a sleek, dark ponytail, a professional camera slung over her shoulder, pushed past the staff. She held a smartphone aloft, its lens clearly pointed in our direction.

It was Chloe Zhang. The investigative financial journalist who’d been sniffing around Holbrook Holdings for weeks, asking about our tax structures. I’d seen her name on internal reports.

Her eyes, sharp and intelligent, swept over the scene: Derek pinned by the Rottweiler, Eleanor in the kennel, and me, holding the damning document. Her phone clicked, a series of rapid-fire shots.

“Is everything alright here, Mr. Holbrook?” Chloe called out, her voice clear and carrying, though tinged with a predatory curiosity. She didn’t wait for an answer.

Instead, she moved closer, her camera still recording. The estate staff looked bewildered, unsure whether to stop her or defer to her apparent professional authority.

I instinctively held up the DNA report. The words “CONFIDENTIAL PATERNITY REPORT” were visible, unmistakable. The details of Derek’s lack of biological connection to Eleanor were stark on the page.

“No, everything is not alright,” I said, my voice shaking slightly, but firm. “This man, Derek Holbrook, just locked his 70-year-old mother in a kennel to force a corporate land transfer.”

My words hung in the air, heavy with accusation.

Chloe’s eyes widened fractionally. Her camera adjusted, zooming in on the document in my hand, then on Eleanor, then on Derek’s contorted face.

“And this,” I continued, holding the report higher, “is what fell out of his briefcase when the dog stopped him.”

I met Derek’s furious, panicked gaze. He was trapped. Caught in the act, and now exposed for a secret that tore at the very foundation of our family.

Chloe didn’t ask for permission. She simply walked closer, extending her hand towards me. Her expression was serious, professional. “I’m Chloe Zhang,” she said. “May I see that?”

The flashing red light on her smartphone indicated she was still recording. This wasn’t just a family secret anymore; it was a public scandal in the making.
