The diagnostic program whirred, slowly pulling data. It was going to take time, maybe an hour or more, to get past the corrupted sections of the memory card.

I couldn’t just sit there. Julian could come back any minute. I scanned the wrecked cabin, looking for anything out of place, anything he might have missed.

A discarded fast-food wrapper lay on the passenger seat. Not a surprise. Julian ate out constantly.

Then, a faint, sweet smell. Not car freshener. Something flowery. A faint smudge of red lipstick on the passenger airbag cover. Not my shade.

Suddenly, a small voice piped up from the garage doorway. “Auntie Maya? What are you doing with Uncle Julian’s broken car?”

I jumped, dropping the diagnostic cable. Seven-year-old Leo, Julian’s nephew, stood there, clutching a bright blue toy truck. His eyes were wide, taking in the crumpled metal.

“Hey, Leo,” I managed, trying to sound calm. “Just… looking at it.”

He shuffled his feet, his gaze fixed on the damage. “It’s super broken.”

“Yeah, it is.” I straightened up, forcing a smile. “Did you see anything happen to it?”

Leo shook his head, then paused. “Nope. But I saw Uncle Julian driving it last night.”

My breath caught. “You did? What time was that, sweetie?”

“Really, really late,” he said, drawing out the words. “It was dark, and I couldn’t sleep. My window looks out on the driveway, you know?”

He gestured vaguely towards his bedroom window, which indeed overlooked the driveway. Julian had a habit of parking his prized car right under it.

“And who was with him?” I asked, trying to keep my voice light. My heart was pounding again.

“Oh, it was a blonde lady,” Leo said, totally unconcerned. “She had really shiny hair. And he was driving super fast. Near the river bridge!”

He made a whooshing sound with his toy truck. “They were arguing, I think. She was yelling.”

“Yelling?” I pressed, my mind racing. This was it.

“Yeah. And then he dropped her off at her apartment. Chloe. That was her name. He said it real loud when she got out.” Leo tilted his head. “Is she a bad driver, Auntie Maya? Because Uncle Julian crashed right after that, huh?”

My gaze locked onto the diagnostic screen, now blinking with a “Retrieval 30% Complete” message. A blonde woman named Chloe. Near the river bridge. Yelling. Julian driving “super fast.”

The pieces were starting to click into place. Leo’s innocent words were a sledgehammer to Julian’s fabricated story.
