I crept closer to the main vehicle exit, hoping to slip out with a delivery truck. But as I hugged the concrete pillars, I caught snippets of conversation over a crackling two-way radio.
“…stole from his deathbed! Explicit instructions from Mr. Drake: detain on sight!”
The words hit me like a physical blow. Marcus wasn’t just trying to stop me; he was destroying my name. He had broadcast an emergency alert to all 200 employees, offices and docks alike.
I was the thief who exploited Arthur’s dementia, who looted corporate accounts.
Peeking into the main courtyard, I saw Sarah, my assistant, speaking animatedly with two other office workers. She looked upset, gesturing towards the building. I thought of calling out to her, pleading for help.
“Sarah!” I whispered, a desperate, raw sound.
Her head snapped up, eyes wide. She saw me, her face blanching. Recognition flashed, followed by stark, undeniable fear.
“Security! She’s here! It’s her!” Sarah shrieked, pointing directly at me with a trembling hand.
Her voice sliced through the courtyard, echoing off the glass and steel. Other heads turned. I ducked back behind the pillar, the betrayal a cold, hard knot in my stomach. Thirty minutes. Thirty minutes since Arthur’s will was read, and Marcus had already poisoned the entire company against me. There was no one inside Kestrel I could trust.
