Chapter 9: A Fragile Future

The call came two days later, a crisp, formal summons from Eleanor Albright. “Evelyn, darling,” her voice purred, laced with an artificial sweetness that set my teeth on edge. “We need an urgent family meeting. To discuss… recent unpleasantness. For the sake of appearances, of course.”

I knew exactly what “unpleasantness” she meant. David’s accident was front-page news in the business section, though it mentioned nothing of the underlying corporate scandal. The whispers, however, were starting. And Eleanor, ever the puppeteer, intended to control the narrative.

The Albright mansion, usually a place of quiet grandeur, felt like a court chamber as I stepped inside. Robert, looking pale and drawn, was already there, seated beside his mother at the expansive mahogany dining table. Brenda, Robert’s sister, perched rigidly on the edge of her chair, her eyes darting nervously between Eleanor and me. Michael, his brother, slumped in his seat, seemingly indifferent but absorbing everything.

Eleanor sat at the head of the table, regal and unyielding, a predator among her carefully arranged prey. She fixed me with a stare that held no warmth, only calculating assessment.

“Thank you all for coming,” Eleanor began, her voice smooth and authoritative. “As you know, there have been… unfortunate rumors circulating. Whispers that could damage the family name, and by extension, Albright & Sons.”

She paused, her gaze sweeping over us, lingering on Robert, then on me.

“These whispers,” she continued, “appear to stem from a series of highly regrettable misunderstandings. Particularly regarding Robert’s professional association with Vanessa Caldwell, and Evelyn’s… emotional reaction to it.”

My jaw tightened. Emotional reaction. That was her angle. The crazy, jealous wife.

“Evelyn,” Eleanor said, turning her full attention to me, her voice now tinged with a feigned concern. “We understand this has been a trying time for you. Matters of the heart can be deeply unsettling. And of course, the stress of David Caldwell’s accident… it must be overwhelming.”

She offered me a pitying smile, one that didn’t reach her eyes.

“But we must address the seriousness of certain… accusations,” she pressed on, her tone hardening imperceptibly. “Accusations that have reached beyond the family, threatening to undermine Robert’s position, and indeed, the very stability of Albright & Sons.”

Brenda piped up, her voice surprisingly firm, echoing Eleanor’s sentiment. “Evelyn, Mother has a point. Robert has worked tirelessly for the company. These kinds of public accusations, they aren’t fair to him. Or to us.”

Michael, roused from his apathy, grunted in agreement. “It’s bad for business, Evelyn. You need to think about the optics.”

I stared at them, a bitter laugh threatening to escape. Optics? They worried about optics while their mother orchestrated corporate theft and framed her own son’s affair as a cover.

“Optics?” I repeated, my voice steady despite the tremor in my hands beneath the table. “Is that what we’re calling it now? Not corporate espionage? Not betrayal?”

Eleanor’s smile vanished. “Evelyn, dear, let’s not be dramatic. We are a family. We support one another. Robert has assured us there was nothing untoward beyond an unfortunate, if unprofessional, flirtation. A lapse in judgment, perhaps, which he deeply regrets.” She shot Robert a pointed look. “Isn’t that right, Robert?”

Robert shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He met my gaze for a fleeting moment, a flicker of guilt in his eyes, before looking away.

“Yes, Mother,” he mumbled. “It was a mistake. A professional indiscretion. Nothing more.”

His words, meant to appease Eleanor, felt like a fresh stab. He was still playing her game, still protecting her lies.

“And now,” Eleanor continued, turning back to me, her voice softening, but her eyes like steel, “your distress, while understandable, seems to be manifesting in… rather extreme claims. Claims that could have devastating consequences for everyone.”

She leaned forward, her elbows on the table. “You’ve been speaking to David Caldwell, haven’t you? And now you’re talking about ‘corporate espionage’?” She made the phrase sound utterly preposterous, something plucked from a cheap novel.

“David Caldwell was seriously injured, Eleanor,” I said, my voice rising. “He almost died. And it wasn’t because of a ‘flirtation.’ He found something. Something you orchestrated.”

Brenda gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. “Evelyn! How can you say such a thing to Mother?”

“It’s reckless,” Michael added, shaking his head. “You’re going to destroy everything.”

I looked at Robert, desperately searching for a sign, any sign, that he might stand up to her, to them. But he remained silent, his gaze fixed on the gleaming surface of the table.

Eleanor watched my reaction, her eyes sharp. She had successfully isolated me. Robert, Brenda, Michael – they were her shield, her chorus of denunciation.

“Evelyn,” she said, her voice now a chilling blend of maternal disappointment and steely command. “I suggest you take some time to recover your equilibrium. Perhaps speak with a professional. These… fanciful notions… are not beneficial to anyone, least of all yourself or Robert.”

“Are you saying I’m crazy?” I challenged, my voice trembling with suppressed rage.

“I am saying you are overwrought,” Eleanor corrected, her tone patronizing. “And your accusations are baseless. They could lead to legal repercussions, Evelyn. For you. For Robert. For the entire family.”

She was threatening me. Right there, in front of her children, my husband.

“And what about InnovateTech?” I shot back, unable to hold it in. “What about their stolen intellectual property? Is that ‘fanciful’ too?”

A ripple went through the room. Robert flinched visibly. Even Brenda and Michael exchanged uneasy glances. I had hit a nerve.

Eleanor, however, recovered instantly. Her composure was terrifying. “InnovateTech? Whatever are you speaking about, dear? Albright & Sons has had a long and entirely legitimate business relationship with InnovateTech. Any ‘stolen property’ claims are libelous and utterly without foundation.”

She turned to Robert. “Robert, I trust you have put a stop to Evelyn’s… investigations? For the sake of your career, and your family.”

Robert looked up, his face a mask of conflict. He swallowed hard. “I’m trying, Mother. Evelyn is… she’s upset.”

“Upset?” I spat, the word burning on my tongue. “I have proof, Robert! Proof that you and Vanessa were involved in corporate espionage, orchestrated by your mother, using your ‘affair’ as a smokescreen!”

Brenda let out a little shriek. “Evelyn! You can’t accuse Robert of something like that!”

“She’s lost it,” Michael muttered, shaking his head.

Eleanor rose slowly from her chair, her presence dominating the room. “Enough,” she commanded, her voice cutting through the rising tension. “This meeting is over. Evelyn, I suggest you reconsider the gravity of your words. They carry weight. And consequences.”

She walked around the table, stopping beside Robert, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Robert, ensure your wife understands the gravity of her position. Albright & Sons cannot tolerate such reckless behavior.”

Her message was clear. Back down, or face ruin. They had succeeded in isolating me. Robert was still under her thumb, his siblings complicit. I walked out of that mansion feeling utterly alone, the weight of the decrypted evidence now a crushing burden rather than a weapon. Eleanor had drawn her battle lines. And she had painted me as the enemy.

The air outside felt cold and unwelcoming. The family, a supposed bastion of support, had become a tribunal, condemning me without a trial. I knew Eleanor would not stop. She would use every lever, every connection, to protect her empire. But I also knew the truth. And armed with Chloe’s work, I knew it was far more sinister than they could ever imagine. The question wasn’t if Eleanor would try to destroy me, but when, and how. And whether I could possibly stand against her alone.
