The Corporate Pen, the Affair, and My Mother-in-Law's Financial Empire
The weight of the Phoenix Holdings files burned a hole in my bag. I couldn’t hold onto this information alone any longer. Robert and I needed to face this, together or apart. He was still avoiding my gaze, moving around the house with a palpable tension, but this time, I wouldn’t let him retreat.
I found him in his study, pretending to read financial reports. The room was dark, the only light spilling from his desk lamp, illuminating his tired face.
“Robert, we need to talk,” I said, my voice firm, leaving no room for argument.
He sighed, not looking up. “Evelyn, I’m not doing this again. I told you, there’s nothing more to say. Just drop it.”
“No,” I countered, pulling out the printed documents and placing them on his desk. “There’s plenty more to say. Starting with Phoenix Holdings.”
He froze. His head snapped up, his eyes wide with shock, then a dawning horror. He stared at the documents, his breath catching in his throat.
“What is this?” he whispered, picking up the old article about InnovateTech’s lawsuit against Phoenix Holdings. His hands trembled slightly.
“It’s your mother’s past, Robert,” I said, my voice deliberately calm. “It’s how she operates. A stolen patent, a shell company, a disgruntled employee. All of it a blueprint for what she’s doing now.”
I laid down Arthur Finch’s employment records, showing his sudden dismissal from InnovateTech. “Arthur Finch. Ring a bell? He was the director of Phoenix Holdings. And he conveniently left InnovateTech just before the lawsuit.”
Robert dropped the papers as if they had burned him. He stumbled back, collapsing into his leather armchair, his face ashen. The bravado, the defensiveness, the carefully constructed indifference – it all shattered, replaced by a raw, unadulterated fear.
“She always ensures loyalty, one way or another,” I quoted his own words from our previous argument. “Through rewards, through threats. She leaves you with no option but to fall in line, or lose everything. Isn’t that right, Robert? Because you’ve seen this play out before, haven’t you? Perhaps you were even a part of it.”
He buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking. He didn’t deny it. The silence in the room was heavy, suffocating. I watched him, my heart aching for the man I married, but my resolve unyielding.
Finally, he lifted his head, his eyes red-rimmed and filled with a pain that went deeper than anything I had ever seen.
“She threatened to destroy me, Evelyn,” he choked out, his voice hoarse, barely a whisper. “Years ago. When I was just starting out at Albright & Sons. I was young, ambitious, stupid. I saw an opportunity, or at least she made it look like one.”
He took a ragged breath. “She approached me with the Phoenix Holdings scheme. Told me it was a brilliant strategic move, completely above board, just ‘aggressive market tactics.’ She made me believe it was my big chance to prove myself, to earn my place on the board. She even hinted I’d be overlooked if I didn’t participate, that I wasn’t ‘tough enough’ for the family business.”
“And you went along with it,” I stated, not a question.
“I helped her, yes,” he confessed, shame etched onto his face. “I provided some internal InnovateTech reports she needed, thinking it was just market analysis. But then I saw what she was doing. The shell company, the way she squeezed Arthur Finch after he was fired, turning his anger into leverage. When the lawsuit hit, I knew. I knew I was complicit.”
His voice cracked. “I tried to back out. I told her I couldn’t do it. That it was wrong. And that’s when she showed me her true colors.”
He looked at me, his eyes wide with remembered terror. “She threatened to expose me, Evelyn. To ruin my career before it even started. To tell everyone I was a thief, an ungrateful son who bit the hand that fed him. She said she’d make sure I’d never work in this industry again. And she told me she’d make sure I was disinherited, cut off completely. She even subtly threatened… our family. Our future family, if I ever had one. That she would make sure I had nothing.”
My stomach clenched. Eleanor’s cruelty knew no bounds. She had blackmailed her own son for years, holding his past over his head, leveraging his ambition and fear to ensure his complicity.
“So, the current scheme,” I said, “with Vanessa. She blackmailed you into it.”
He nodded, tears finally streaming down his face. “When InnovateTech came up again, the opportunity to steal their new solar tech… she came to me. She told me it was my chance to ‘redeem myself,’ to ‘prove my loyalty’ after Phoenix Holdings. And if I didn’t… she’d expose everything. Not just my part in Phoenix Holdings, but what she claimed was my deeper, more direct involvement. She made it sound like I was the mastermind.”
He gasped for air, struggling to speak. “She made me set up Vanessa as the decoy, knowing I’d resist the affair angle. She said it would be the perfect smokescreen if anything went wrong. She designed the flirtatious texts, told us exactly what to say, when to say it. And she made Vanessa send the micro-SD card to my car, knowing you’d find it. It was all a calculated trap, Evelyn. For me. For us. So that if anyone looked too closely, they’d only see an affair, or blame me.”
The confession hung heavy in the air, a devastating tapestry of manipulation and fear. Robert had been trapped, a victim of his own mother’s ruthless ambition and his past mistakes. And the initial “affair” was not just a cover for corporate espionage, but a deeper trap designed by Eleanor to frame Robert himself.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked, my voice soft now, tinged with a new understanding.
“I was terrified, Evelyn,” he whispered. “Terrified of her. Of what she would do to you, to the children, if I defied her. And… ashamed. So deeply ashamed of my past, of what I let her make me do.”
He wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, a new glint in his gaze. “But I haven’t been completely passive. When she forced me into this new InnovateTech scheme, I started compiling everything. Every text message she sent to Vanessa, every instruction she gave me. The unredacted thread of communications, all of it. Between Eleanor, Vanessa, and me. It explicitly lays out her direct orders for the espionage, the setup, everything.”
He stood up, walking to a hidden safe behind a bookshelf. He spun the dial, the click echoing loudly in the quiet room. He pulled out a sleek, black external hard drive, encrypted and locked.
“This is it,” he said, handing it to me. “The full story. Proof of her instructions, her threats, her decades of manipulation. I was going to use it to protect myself, if she ever came for me directly. But after what she did to David, and how she tried to turn the family against you… I can’t anymore. I can’t live like this.”
He looked at me, a desperate plea in his eyes. “I know this doesn’t erase what I did. But I want to help you expose her. To bring her down, for good. Before she destroys any more lives. Before she destroys us.”
I looked at the hard drive, then at Robert, a whirlwind of emotions swirling within me. Betrayal, anger, but also a fragile hope. He had been complicit, yes, but he had also been a prisoner, building his own secret arsenal against his oppressor. My husband, the man I had believed to be Eleanor’s obedient pawn, was now offering to be her undoing. An unlikely ally, indeed. The battle against Eleanor Albright was about to escalate, and this time, I wouldn’t be fighting alone.
