Locked in Her Late Husband's Secret Vault: A Widow's Trap at $4,200-a-Night Vail Retreat
👉 Previous Decision: You chose to type your own birthdate into the keypad to force the door open immediately.
My heart hammered against my ribs. I had to act, had to assert some control. Eleanor wanted me to hesitate. I wouldn’t.
“Stand back,” I commanded, my voice surprisingly steady. “I’m going to try my own birthdate.”
Chloe looked terrified, but Julian nodded, stepping a few paces away. I took a deep breath, focusing on the cold metal of the keypad.
*1-1-0-3-9-2*. My fingers pressed the numbers firmly, deliberately. Each click echoed too loudly in the subterranean silence.
The digital display, instead of green, immediately flashed an angry, pulsing red. A piercing, metallic shriek erupted from the keypad, tearing through the cellar. It was deafening, painful.
Then, with a heavy, grinding groan, thick steel shutters slammed down over the two exits we had used to enter. Dust billowed, choking the air. The small, bare bulb overhead flickered once, twice, then died, plunging us into absolute, suffocating darkness.
Cold, dry air blasted from unseen ceiling vents, chilling us to the bone. I could hear Chloe whimpering, Julian breathing rapidly.
“Maya?” Julian’s voice was a strained whisper in the sudden void.
From the top of the cellar stairs, a sharp, metallic clang rang out. Heavy boots thudded down the wooden steps, slow and deliberate.
Then, a harsh, echoing crash. The upper access panel, the one leading to the main lodge, flew open with a violent kick. A blinding beam of light cut through the black, revealing the silhouettes of armed men standing in the entryway.
We were trapped.
