I ignored Victor’s sputtering protests and turned my back on the chaos of his front lawn. The critical target was the underground financial vault.

“Alpha team, secure the subterranean vault,” I ordered into my comms, striding purposefully towards the side entrance leading to the basement. “Gamma team, sweep the main house for personnel and digital assets.”

The heavy steel door to the basement was already propped open by two agents. The air grew cooler, carrying the scent of concrete and old money.

Inside the vault, the atmosphere was sterile, almost clinical. Banks of servers hummed. Filing cabinets stretched along one wall. A massive, circular vault door stood ajar, revealing stacks of cash and neatly bundled ledgers inside.

“Agent Lin,” Brody’s voice crackled over my earpiece. “Victor’s legal team is already filing emergency injunctions. They’re claiming procedural violations.”

I didn’t pause. “Standard stall tactics. Continue with the full asset identification and freeze.”

Two agents were already systematically labeling server racks, their gloved hands moving swiftly. Another began documenting the contents of the open vault.

I pulled on a pair of examination gloves. My focus narrowed to the task.

“We need a complete inventory, financial records, and every single digital asset mirrored,” I instructed, my voice echoing slightly in the confined space. “Every piece of paper, every byte of data.”

A young agent, Ramirez, approached me. “Agent Lin, we’re encountering resistance from Mr. Ruiz’s on-site legal counsel. They’re demanding we restrict the search to only what’s visible, claiming anything structural requires an additional warrant.”

He gestured vaguely at the plaster-and-wood paneling that lined parts of the vault, ostensibly for soundproofing or aesthetics.

My eyes scanned the bland walls. Syndicate operations often hid their deepest secrets behind the most innocuous facades. A structural limitation now could allow them to burn crucial evidence later.

“Tell them to read the warrant again,” I said, my voice sharp. “It grants access to all areas storing financial records. That includes structural voids if suspicion warrants.”

Brody’s voice came back through my earpiece, a low hum of urgency. “Maya, they’re calling municipal court, trying to get a local judge to issue a restraining order against us. Says we’re overstepping the bounds of the federal order.”

“Let them,” I replied, a cold certainty settling in. “We’re not stopping. Not until every possible hiding place is accounted for.”

The humming of the servers filled the silence as I prepared for the next step.
