Ramirez worked diligently, prying loose the first section of drywall paneling. It came away with a tearing sound, revealing a shallow cavity filled with insulation. Nothing immediately incriminating.

“Another one,” I directed, pointing to a section near the back corner, directly behind where the shattered vase’s display stand had been upstairs. “Start there.”

Outside, the storm intensified into something beyond a normal weather event. The low, strange hum grew into a pulsing thrum that vibrated through the floor. It felt like the air itself was under pressure.

Then, a blinding flash.

White light filled the small, grimy basement windows, followed by a crack that was less a thunderclap and more a physical blow. The entire building bucked. Dust rained down from the ceiling.

The power grid chose that exact moment to give up the ghost. The hum of the servers died. The fluorescent lights extinguished, plunging the vault into abrupt, disorienting darkness.

Emergency floodlights, battery-powered, snapped on a moment later, casting long, stark shadows. The air smelled of ozone.

“Report!” Brody’s voice was sharp in my ear, static-laced. “Damage assessment!”

“Grounding rod must have taken a direct hit, sir,” an agent reported. “Power’s out across the whole estate. Maybe the block.”

But it wasn’t just the power. The lightning strike had delivered an eerie vibration, a deep tremor that continued to hum in the very bones of the building.

I looked back at the wall Ramirez had been working on. The section I’d pointed to, behind the ghost of the vase display, had taken the brunt of the shockwave.

A spiderweb of cracks had appeared, radiating from a central point. And then, slowly, inexorably, the drywall began to shift.

It wasn’t just plaster. It was as if the very structure was giving way, revealing a hollow space that had been perfectly concealed. More cracks formed, wider this time, letting out a puff of ancient, stale air.

The wall crumbled inward, not with an explosion, but with a silent, heavy sigh. A section of the ceiling above it gave way too, sending down a shower of fine white dust and plaster.

A small, dark object tumbled from the newly exposed cavity. It hit the concrete floor with a soft thud, rolling to a stop.

It lay just at Victor Ruiz’s feet. He stood rigid, a few feet from me, his face pale and slack in the harsh emergency lighting, his eyes fixed on the fallen object.

The storm’s unnatural intensity seemed to lull, as if its purpose had been served.
