Chapter 12: A Quiet Morning

Julian’s face contorted, a mask of fury replacing the earlier panic. He slammed the cage down on a nearby side table, the parrot letting out a startled squawk.

“He’s deranged!” Julian roared, pointing a trembling finger at me. “Do you hear him? He’s making up stories, projecting his own paranoid delusions onto a bird!”

He pivoted to address the elders, his voice rising in a desperate plea. “This is exactly what I warned you about! The crash… it broke him. He’s hallucinating conversations, inventing plots to hold onto power!”

The elders, however, still looked unsettled. The parrot’s mimicry had been too specific, too chillingly accurate, to be easily dismissed as random noise. Old Mancini’s eyes narrowed, his gaze darting between Julian and me.

“Hallucinations don’t parrot exact monetary figures, Julian,” Mancini said, his voice slow and deliberate.

Julian flushed, his composure completely gone. “It’s a trick! He taught the bird these phrases! He’s trying to frame me!”

He lunged for the birdcage, as if to silence Shadow permanently. I moved faster, stepping in front of the table, blocking his path. He stumbled back, his eyes blazing with hatred.

“You won’t get away with this, Leo,” Julian hissed, his voice low and menacing, entirely different from his earlier public performance. “I’ll make sure everyone in this city knows you’re a raving lunatic.”

He spun on his heel and stormed out of the boardroom, the heavy oak doors slamming shut behind him, rattling the antique glass in the display cases. The parrot, left behind, let out a short, sharp whistle.

Within hours, the whispers began. Not just whispers, but a full-blown public smear campaign, orchestrated with chilling efficiency. My phone rang non-stop, filled with coded messages from street captains and associates.

“Leo, they’re saying you’re seeing things,” Tony, one of my loyal enforcers, said, his voice tight with concern. “That the crash scrambled your brains.”

Underworld channels, usually focused on rival turf wars or new shipments, were now flooded with stories painting me as a shell-shocked madman. Anonymous “sources” claimed I was erratic, violent, prone to wild accusations. They said I’d lost my touch, that my once-legendary strategic mind had shattered.

Julian was leveraging every connection, every favor, twisting the narrative until the truth was buried under layers of manufactured doubt. He wasn’t just trying to discredit me to the elders; he was trying to turn the entire city against me, to make me a pariah, isolated and alone. The syndicate, which thrived on reputation and unwavering leadership, would quickly abandon a leader perceived as unstable.

The parrot, still in the boardroom, watched me with its intelligent, unblinking eyes. It was both my witness and the catalyst for Julian’s desperate, vicious attack. I knew I needed to act, not with brute force, but with something far more surgical.
