Chapter 12: The Next Morning at the Old Shed

Julian shifted in his seat, his gaze still fixed on the bee smoker, then darting to the deed. He seemed caught between a desire to dismiss the items and an innate curiosity.

“So, you want to talk about the company?” he finally bit out, his voice sharp. “Because if you think this changes anything, Mom, you’re wrong. Finch has made it clear what you’re doing.”

He leaned forward, his hands gripping the edge of the table. “You’ve been expanding too fast. Taking on too much debt. Running us into the ground. I have to protect my future, my inheritance.”

He launched into a torrent of words, a release of years of bottled-up fear and resentment. He spoke of his anxieties when I’d announced the new botanical research wing, how he’d felt marginalized by decisions he wasn’t consulted on.

“You never trusted me with the big decisions,” he accused, his voice rising. “Always kept me on the periphery. Now you’re selling off parcels, giving away our legacy.”

He paced his arguments, citing specific numbers, all clearly fed to him by Finch. He recounted perceived slights, instances where he felt overlooked in favor of new hires or larger corporate strategies.

He gestured wildly, his frustration palpable. “I’m 38, Mom. I’ve worked my whole life for this, and you’re treating me like a child.”

I sat perfectly still, my hands clasped in my lap. I didn’t interrupt. I didn’t defend. I just listened, meeting his agitated gaze with a calm, unwavering presence.

The bee smoker, a silent witness, gleamed in the sunlight between us.

He spoke of his fear of the company failing, of his own financial insecurity, of the pressure he felt to live up to his father’s and my legacy. Finch’s name punctuated his accusations, always as the source of his information, the one who “understood” the precariousness of our position.

His words, though laced with anger, carried an underlying current of deep-seated anxiety. He wasn’t just angry; he was terrified.

The longer I remained silent, simply absorbing his pain, the more his aggressive stance began to waver. His voice, initially loud and accusatory, softened, becoming tinged with exhaustion.

He ran a hand through his hair, his shoulders slumping. He had expected a fight, a rebuttal, a defense. My quiet, unconditional maternal presence was disarming him.

He had vented decades of perceived inadequacy, and I had simply offered him space to be heard.
