“Maya, we need to move,” Chloe urged, her eyes wide with panic as Marcus’s hand landed on the vault doorframe.

I ignored her, my fingers flying across my phone screen. I snapped a quick, blurry photo of the bloodstained watch and another of the cabin purchase receipt. My younger half-brother, Sam, was the only one I could trust.

I typed a frantic message: “Sam, look at this. Marcus bought the cabin with Mom’s money. There’s a bloodstain on her watch.”

Marcus pushed the vault door open wider, stepping into the room. “What did you just do?” he bellowed, his eyes blazing.

My phone vibrated immediately. A message from Sam. “WHERE ARE YOU? I knew it. Been tracking his digital footprint for two years. He’s been skimming from the trust. I’m already on my way. I have his hidden ledger files.”

My jaw dropped. Sam. My quiet, tech-savvy younger brother. He knew.

“Sam knows,” I choked out to Chloe, holding up my phone. “He’s coming.”

Marcus snatched my phone. His eyes scanned Sam’s message, then widened slightly. The rage on his face was replaced by a flicker of fear.

“You told Sam?” he growled, his grip tightening on my phone.

“He’s driving up the mountain right now,” I said, a surge of adrenaline pushing back my fear. “With your files.”
