Chapter 4: An Unexpected Alliance

#content-1

The revelation hit me like a physical blow. Julian’s father, a revered figure, a fraud. My hands, still holding the reel, began to shake.

Outside, the metallic scraping sound grew louder. Julian was no longer just slamming his fists; he was using something, a tool, against the door. A pry bar, perhaps. The steel groaned, a high-pitched whine that cut through the vault’s silence.

I wanted to scream, to lash out at the injustice, but my throat remained tight, as always. My only option was to protect this evidence.

Then, a faint creak echoed from the far end of the damp corridor, away from the vault door. I straightened, my head snapping towards the sound.

A maintenance door, usually locked and unmarked, slowly swung inward. It opened onto a utility passage I rarely used.

A figure stepped into the dim light. Tall, elegant even in the gloom, with a severe blonde bob. Clara Danforth. Julian’s ex-wife.

She held a heavy ring of old, brass master keys. Their glint was almost blinding in the sparse light. Her expression was unreadable, her eyes fixed on me, then on the vault door where Julian was still tearing at the hinges.

Clara raised a hand, not in greeting, but in a gesture to silence me. Her lips didn’t move. She just stared at the battered vault door, then at me, then at the keys in her hand. The heavy metal ring dangled, each key a promise of access, or an even deeper trap.
