Whistleblower Finds Her Own Silicone Body Double in a -20°C Studio Vault and Uncovers Her Mother-in-Law’s $4.2M Crime Ring
Detective Kincaid, his face a mask of official concern, pushed past Julian without waiting for an invitation. His eyes, glinting beneath heavy brows, swept over the living room. Two uniformed officers fanned out behind him, their hands resting casually on their holsters.
“We’re here to secure all studio assets,” Kincaid announced, his gaze settling on me. “That includes all personal laptops, flash drives, and any studio access keys you may possess. Under court order.”
I felt the familiar weight of my primary whistleblowing flash drive in my jeans pocket. Evelyn moved fast. Too fast for a legitimate investigation. Kincaid, with his expensive watches and too-perfect hair, wasn’t here on official business. He was here on Evelyn’s payroll.
Just then, the front door opened again. My sister, Chloe Lin, burst in, her shoulders tight with professional outrage. “Detective Kincaid, what is the meaning of this? You cannot raid a private residence without proper notification to legal counsel!”
Her voice was sharp, a practiced journalist’s demand for answers. As she spoke, she moved closer, her hand instinctively reaching out to steady me. In that brief, comforting contact, I slid the small, cold flash drive from my pocket into the inside pocket of her coat. Her fingers brushed against it, a quick, silent acknowledgment.
Kincaid ignored Chloe. He watched me, a smirk playing on his lips. “Mrs. Croft, any attempt to conceal or destroy evidence will result in additional charges.”
He snatched my laptop from the coffee table, then my personal phone from my hand. He held them up, a small, triumphant gesture. “You are an active criminal suspect, Mrs. Croft. Do not leave Los Angeles County. We’ll be in touch.”
The officers quickly searched a few rooms, overturning cushions and rifling through papers, before departing as abruptly as they had arrived. The house settled back into an uneasy silence. Julian stood frozen, watching their tail lights disappear down the street.
Chloe waited until the last police cruiser had rounded the corner. She pulled the flash drive from her pocket, her brow furrowed. “What is this?”
“Everything,” I whispered. “The proof.”
She plugged the tiny drive into her own sleek, encrypted laptop. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing the initial firewalls. Her eyes widened, scanning the rows of data, the coded transactions. A sharp intake of breath escaped her lips.
“$4.2 million,” she breathed, her gaze snapping up to mine. “Funneled out of the stunt crew safety fund. Over four years. Shell accounts, offshore transfers… Maya, this isn’t just theft. This is grand larceny. And Evelyn Croft’s name is all over it.”
