Whistleblower Finds Her Own Silicone Body Double in a -20°C Studio Vault and Uncovers Her Mother-in-Law’s $4.2M Crime Ring
The anonymous email arrived on Chloe’s encrypted burner phone, a single image attachment and a cryptic message: “Vault 4 has a history. Ask about the master sculptor.” The image was faded, a scanned work order from six years prior, detailed with specifications for a hyper-realistic silicone body. The signature, elegant and unfamiliar, read: Gareth Hallowell.
A quick search brought up old Hollywood trade articles. Gareth Hallowell: a legendary prosthetic sculptor, known for his lifelike creations. He had vanished without a trace in 2018, whispers of scandal and professional ruin trailing him.
“A fire incident at Vault 4,” Chloe murmured, reading a recent online blurb. “That’s why he contacted us. He knows.”
The lead provided in the email pointed to a remote, winding road deep in Topanga Canyon. The drive was a maze of dusty turns and overgrown foliage, finally ending at a dilapidated garage workshop, half-hidden by ancient oaks. Rusting tools lay scattered outside, and the air smelled of clay and old plaster.
A man emerged from the shadows inside, his face lined and wary, his clothes rumpled. He held a well-worn carving tool in his hand. His eyes, though guarded, held a flicker of recognition as he saw me.
“Maya Croft,” he said, his voice raspy. “I saw your picture on the news. The studio fire incident. Evelyn’s still up to her old tricks.”
I introduced Chloe. “You’re Gareth Hallowell?”
He gave a slow nod. “What’s left of him. Evelyn Croft ensured that. She framed me, ruined my career. Made sure I disappeared.”
He gestured for us to step inside. The workshop was a trove of his past brilliance, unfinished sculptures gathering dust. He picked up a delicate hand mold, turning it over in his calloused fingers.
“Six years ago,” he began, his voice dropping. “Evelyn commissioned me. A stunt performer, a young man named Leo, had been severely injured on one of her sets. Faulty wire harnesses, just like you’ve been documenting. He threatened to sue. Evelyn wanted a way to… replace him, for insurance purposes. A body double, to stage a new ‘accident’ that would look like his own negligence.”
He put the mold down, his gaze distant. “I made it. A perfect, hyper-realistic replica. After I delivered it, Evelyn destroyed my reputation. False accusations of intellectual property theft, embezzlement. Blacklisted from every studio in town. I lost everything. She wanted to make sure I could never expose her.”
He looked at me, a grim understanding passing between us. “The vault, the cold. That’s her signature. She did this to me. She was going to do it to you, too.”
