Chapter 10: The Sovereign Room

The boardroom was a gleaming expanse of polished dark wood and glass. Twelve directors, a mix of old money and new tech, sat around the enormous table. The air was thick with anticipation. My entrance drew every eye. Julian walked in moments later, taking his place at the head of the table as if it were already his throne.

He looked every inch the CEO he believed himself to be.

The meeting began promptly at 9:00 AM. Julian opened with a poised, confident presentation, his voice smooth and persuasive. He spoke of my “youthful brilliance” but quickly pivoted to my “lack of executive experience,” citing the very articles he’d likely orchestrated overnight.

“While Maya’s algorithmic contributions are invaluable,” Julian said, gesturing towards a chart on the screen showing my equity stake, “$14,000,000 in a seventeen-year-old’s hands presents a significant governance risk.”

He proposed a full buyout of my shares, a generous sum that would, he argued, allow me to pursue my education without the burdens of corporate leadership. The numbers flashed on the screen: a fair market valuation, carefully calculated to look reasonable.

The board members murmured, some nodding in agreement. They were used to these kinds of power plays. A young prodigy, easily swayed, easily bought out.

Julian finished, a faint, almost imperceptible smile playing on his lips. “I believe this path ensures the stability and continued growth of Driscoll-Lin Technologies.”

He looked towards the corporate council, seated to his right, signaling for the vote. The chairman, a stern-faced woman named Ms. Davies, cleared her throat, reaching for her gavel.

Just as she raised her hand, I stood up.

My chair scraped loudly against the floor, cutting through the hushed silence. Every head swiveled towards me. I walked to the central display panel, my heart pounding.

“Before we vote,” I said, my voice ringing clear and strong in the cavernous room, “I have something to present.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed, a flicker of something unreadable passing through them.

I inserted a USB drive into the display. The giant screen on the wall, moments ago displaying Julian’s corporate projections, flickered. Then, my high-definition video of Evelyn Pierce cowering in Julian’s closet played, silent and damning.

Five seconds. Enough for everyone to see.

A collective gasp swept through the room. Ms. Davies dropped her gavel with a sharp clatter. Julian sat motionless, his face now completely devoid of expression.

“This,” I announced, as the video looped, “is evidence of a moral default. A breach of fiduciary trust by my co-director, Julian Driscoll.”

I walked to the corporate council table, my leather folder open. “And in accordance with the 2021 founders’ agreement, Clause 14-B, which Grandmother Eleanor Lin formally invoked and notarized this morning, I am submitting these emergency filings.”

I placed the stack of documents before the lead corporate attorney, Mr. Harrison. He adjusted his glasses, picked them up, and began to read. A tense, agonizing silence filled the room.

His eyes scanned the pages, his expression shifting from confusion to grudging recognition. He looked at Julian, then back at the document, then at Ms. Davies.

“Ms. Davies,” Mr. Harrison finally said, his voice tight, “Clause 14-B of the original Driscoll-Lin Partnership agreement, though expired in 2021 as a standard guardianship provision, stipulates that in the event of a documented moral default by the acting co-director before the heir’s eighteenth birthday…”

He paused, exhaling slowly.

“…majority voting power and executive authority immediately revert to the original heir, Maya Lin-Oakley.”

The corporate council confirmed it. Valid. Immediately nullifying Julian’s executive authority and transferring majority control to me.
