Chapter 10: The Sovereign Room

A low, collective roar erupted in the boardroom. Directors began to speak over each other, a cacophony of shock and outrage. Ms. Davies pounded her gavel repeatedly, her face flushed with fury.

“Order! Order, please!” she bellowed.

Through the chaos, my gaze was fixed on Julian. He remained utterly still, not contesting the legal maneuver, not offering a single word of defense. He simply sat there, observing the pandemonium as if it were a distant play. No anger, no desperation, nothing I had expected.

His composure unnerved me.

Then, Evelyn Pierce, Julian’s chief strategist, broke. Her carefully constructed facade crumbled. Her eyes, wide with panic, darted between Julian and the furious board members.

“He can’t just walk away from this!” Evelyn shrieked, her voice shrill, cutting through the general noise. She rushed forward, abandoning the signature packets she had been so meticulously arranging.

She held up a tablet, its screen already displaying a complex spreadsheet. “He already signed away his personal shares! Three weeks ago!”

The room plunged into an even deeper, more stunned silence.

Evelyn thrust the tablet towards Ms. Davies. “These are internal audits, Ms. Davies. Julian Driscoll transferred his entire personal share equity – every single cent he owned in Driscoll-Lin Technologies – to a private trust three weeks ago. It was to satisfy external liabilities. He was leaving anyway!”

The revelation hit the room like a physical blow. Julian had stripped himself bare. Not just of his executive power, but of his personal wealth tied to the company.

More chaotic arguing erupted, louder than before. The board members were now furious not just at the scandal, but at Julian’s deliberate self-impoverishment. It seemed he had been preparing for this exit, in some form, for weeks.

Ms. Davies stared at Julian, her face contorted in disbelief. “Mr. Driscoll, is this true?”

Julian finally stirred. He looked at Evelyn, a flash of something unreadable in his eyes – resignation, perhaps? Then he turned to Ms. Davies.

He simply nodded, once.

Then, without another word, Julian quietly gathered his tablet from the table. He stood up, his movements slow and deliberate, as if moving through water. He didn’t look at me. He didn’t look back at the furious board.

He just walked towards the boardroom doors. Leaving me holding absolute control over a company in utter disarray.
