Derrick lunged for the bankruptcy order, his hand shaking. Mayor Carver, quicker than I expected for a man his age, gently but firmly put his hand over the document, protecting it.

“This is slander!” Derrick roared, his face now a furious crimson. “She’s trying to steal my business!”

“Your business?” I asked, my voice still calm, a stark contrast to his rising hysteria. “Or what was left of my late husband’s business after your… stewardship?”

I reached into my handbag once more. This time, I pulled out a stack of glossy flyers, identical to the ones I knew had been circulating through Oakhaven for weeks.

“These,” I announced, holding them up for all to see. They depicted a caricature of me, grasping bags of money, with the word “FREELOADER” emblazoned across the top.

A ripple of unease spread through the room. Many had seen, or even distributed, these very flyers.

“And these,” I continued, placing the flyers beside another stack of papers on the table – a collection of audit reports. “Are the financial summaries Derrick presented to the board.”

I tapped a finger on a specific line item on one of the audit reports. “They claim a surplus, a strong financial position, all while the company hemorrhaged money due to his ill-advised ventures.”

“This smear campaign,” I explained, looking from the flyers to Derrick, “was a desperate attempt to discredit me. To frame me as the spendthrift. All to distract from the truth.”

The room fell silent, save for the low murmur of understanding. Townspeople exchanged glances, their earlier whispers of judgment now transforming into dawning realization.

Derrick’s face hardened, his eyes narrowing. He saw his carefully constructed illusion crumble.

He had painted me as a villain, but now the canvas was flipped, revealing his own crude lines.
