Chapter 5: A: The Confession in the Safe

👉 [Previous Decision]: You chose Option A – Lock themselves inside the vault with Sam’s digital backup keys until Sam arrives.

“Lock it!” I yelled, pulling the heavy vault door shut. Chloe fumbled with the complex locking mechanism from the inside, following Sam’s rapid-fire texted instructions.

The heavy door clanged shut, a reassuring click following. We were safe, for now.

Marcus pounded on the door. “Maya! Open this door right now! You are making a terrible mistake!”

“He can’t get in,” Chloe said, exhaling a shaky breath. “Sam’s instructions worked.”

The vault was surprisingly well-appointed, more like a secure office than a simple storage room. My eyes darted around, looking for anything else Marcus might have hidden.

Behind a large wall-mounted monitor, partially obscured by a fake ventilation grille, I saw it: a small, flush wall safe. My fingers traced the outline.

“Look,” I pointed, my voice hushed.

Chloe helped me pry open the grille. The safe had a simple dial lock. I remembered Marcus’s birthday. I spun the dial.

With a soft click, the safe door swung open. Inside, nestled on a bed of velvet, was a single, aged envelope. My name was scrawled across it in Marcus’s familiar, looping handwriting.

I pulled out the letter. It wasn’t addressed to me, but to his legal team. It was a detailed, horrifying confession. He outlined his entire embezzlement plot, how he had manipulated my mother’s finances, slowly isolating her from her own trust, ensuring she died believing she was financially independent, not a victim of his schemes. The bloodstain on the watch suddenly made terrible sense.

“Oh my God,” I whispered, the paper trembling in my hands. “He did all of this. To Mom.”
