Chapter 5: Intervention by Marcus O’Connell

#content-1

A shadow fell over me as I was speaking with Officer Reed about securing the physical server logs. I turned, expecting another reporter, but instead, it was Marcus O’Connell.

He was Lauren’s ex-fiancé, a man I hadn’t seen since their acrimonious split a year ago. He looked leaner, sharper, his eyes holding a quiet, simmering anger.

“Councilwoman Danforth,” he said, his voice low, just for my ears. “We need to talk. Five minutes, near the security terminal.”

He didn’t wait for an answer, simply turned and walked towards a discreet, paneled alcove that housed the venue’s security hub. I hesitated, then nodded to Officer Reed, following him.

The terminal was a hive of screens, displaying camera feeds from every angle of the pavilion. Marcus leaned against a console, his gaze fixed on a monitor showing Lauren, still surrounded by a dwindling group of supporters, her face a mask of furious indignation.

“Lauren ruined me, Evelyn,” he began, without preamble, his voice tight with controlled fury. “After our engagement ended, she systematically dismantled my architecture firm. Stole clients, smeared my name, cut off my credit lines. I lost everything I’d built for fifteen years.”

A raw, bitter pain edged his words. I knew that feeling all too well.

“What does this have to do with me, Marcus?” I asked, my guard still up.

He turned to face me fully. “I knew she was up to something. I’ve been watching. And I found something.”

He pulled out a sleek, encrypted USB drive from his jacket pocket. It had a small, almost invisible etched symbol on its casing.

“This contains master access tokens to Lauren’s entire campaign network,” he explained, holding it out to me. “Her encrypted servers, her communications, her finance records. Everything.”

My breath hitched. This was an unexpected gift, a game-changer.

“Why give this to me?” I asked, looking from the drive to his intense eyes. “Why now?”

“Revenge, primarily,” he admitted, a grim smile touching his lips. “But also, I still believe in what you stand for, Evelyn. You always fought for integrity, even when Richard and Lauren dismissed it as old-fashioned.”

He paused, then added, “She used a system of encrypted chat groups to coordinate the guest list destruction. It’s all there. And the payments to Croft’s shell entities. All the proof you need.”

“You want to help me take down your ex-fiancée?” I clarified, my hand reaching for the drive.

“More than anything,” he replied, his gaze unwavering. “She needs to be exposed, Evelyn. For what she is, and for what she did to us both.”

I took the drive. It felt impossibly light, yet heavy with potential. This wasn’t just data; it was a key to unlocking the entire conspiracy. Lauren had made an enemy of the wrong man, and now, that enemy was my most unlikely ally.
