My Arrogant Cousin Forced Me to Eat Dinner in a Bathroom at a Town Gala — So I Cancelled Her Son's $4,500 Allowance and Evicted Them Both
It was barely 2:00 PM when another process server arrived at my rented cottage door. This time, it wasn’t the deputy, but a young man in a cheap suit, clutching a thick manila envelope.
“Ms. Eleanor Albright?” he recited, not meeting my eyes.
I took the packet. Inside, 40 pages of legal threats: a cease-and-desist order regarding the Albright name, and a demand for $2 million in “back estate management fees” from Beatrice. Her signature, bold and sprawling, was at the bottom.
Just as I finished skimming the documents, Thomas Halloway’s rental car pulled into my gravel driveway. He emerged, sharp and unyielding as ever, his briefcase in hand.
“They’re not wasting any time,” I observed, handing him Beatrice’s latest volley.
Thomas scanned the papers, a dry chuckle escaping him. “Two million, you say? Rather ambitious. Especially for someone who’s been living off unauthorized loans pulled against the Pine Ridge paper mill’s line of credit.”
He opened his briefcase, pulling out a binder filled with meticulously organized financial ledgers and audit reports. “Fortunately, I came prepared. These are the complete financial records of Pine Ridge Holdings. They clearly show Beatrice’s… creative accounting.”
His finger tapped a specific page. “Here. Three separate commercial property deeds, all purportedly signed by your late brother. Except the signature is a forgery. We have forensic analysis to back it up.”
Thomas nodded to himself. “I’ll file an immediate counter-motion in county court. Attaching these audit reports. Not only will her frivolous claim be dismissed, but she’ll be facing charges for forgery and financial misconduct.”
The thought of Beatrice attempting to extort $2 million from me, while simultaneously siphoning funds from the very company that kept this town afloat, ignited a cold fury. Her greed truly knew no bounds. Thomas’s calm, precise movements, however, gave me a sense of solid ground.
“We need to move quickly,” he said, already on his phone, dictating instructions to his office in Boston. “Her next move will be desperate.”
